Edinburgh Festival Fringe, August 6-15
and 19-27 at 1pm @ Venue #203: Princes Mall
The Play
The Translator's Dilemma is a one-hour drama designed to raise awareness about the dangers of asbestos and the plights of those suffering from asbestos-related illnesses in Scotland, Italy and around the world. Ottavia, a lecturer in translation
studies, is covering a class for a friend. When she opens the notes,
however, she realises the content is closer to home than she could
imagine. Can she give a lecture on asbestos without revealing her own
deadly secrets?
Inspired by the true story of
multinational asbestos executives who allowed the deaths of thousands
of Italians, this play explores the fallout of a killer mineral, and
its effect on a young woman's life. Performed in Italian and English,
by two actors and one overhead projector.
Performances
The show will be on as part of PBH's Free Fringe programme at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. We're in venue number 203 which is at Princes Mall (the shopping centre just next to Waverley train station) and the show runs from August 6-15 and 19-27th at 1pm. Tickets are free, which is one of the reasons that we are fundraising with IndieGoGo.
About Asbestos
Asbestos poses an international problem
that kills 100,000 people worldwide every year, affecting millions of
people on multiple levels. It causes grave health concerns, presents
an environmental risk as a hazardous material that is extremely
difficult to dispose of, and continues to be a workplace safety
problem. Our production aims to provoke audiences and encourage them
to think about concrete things they can do about these issues when
they walk out of the theatre. We hope The Translator's Dilemma will
serve as a springboard for foundations, victims associations and the
general public to work together towards an international ban on
asbestos, to stop the further production and use of the substance,
and to raise awareness about an issue that has been silenced for
decades.
The Translator's Dilemma Needs Funding
As you can well imagine, it will take money to create our production and putting on a show at the fringe isn't cheap. The production team are working for free on the project but we would like to at least pay our director, actors and technicians for their travel expenses. As such, much of our budget will go towards those three weeks of rehearsal and three weeks of performances. The show won't have big sets, but we still need costumes, props, a projector and a screen. We also need to pay for marketing costs, such as printing flyers and posters. If we manage to make more than we need to put the show on, we'll be giving the rest to a Scottish asbestos charity.
Please note that we are performing at the Free Fringe, which means all tickets to our show are FREE. Consider just donating the price of a standard Fringe ticket, which is $17 (£10), which will go directly to our costs, instead of a box office or venue.
And though we're fundraising in dollars, remember that all of our costs are in pounds sterling. Here's a quick conversion guide, so you can see how far your money will go:
$ 10: £ 6
$ 20: £ 12
$ 50: £ 30
$ 100: £ 61
$ 500: £ 308
Other Ways You Can Help
Let other people know! Share the link on your facebook, forward the email, tell people... The more people that see our page the more likely we are to get the pennies together to make it happen! Also, if you know any companies or organizations that might like to get involved (victims' associations, law firms, health organizations, environmental groups, etc.), please contact us.
The other obvious way you can help is to come see the show and spread the word! It's completely free and right in the middle of town during the Fringe.
