Tony Abbott is the Prime Minister of Australia. He was born in London to a British father and an Australian mother, this automatically gave him British citizenship.
Shortly after being told he had won a Rhodes Scholarship Mr Abbott applied for and got Australian citizenship by descent from his Australian mother in 1981. This did not nullify his British citizenship, he became a dual national. Rhodes Trust changed their rules after Mr Abbott got his scholarship as a Briton. He matriculated to Oxford University as a British citizen. FOI requests to the Home Office in the UK and to the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet in Canberra have failed to provide proof of the form RN needed to renounce his British citizenship.
The National Archives of Australia keep citizenship applications for everyone who applies to be a citizen. These are generally public documents available to all. For some reason the NAA made Mr Abbott's application file a secret document in February 2014.
Australia's constitution, section 44, precludes dual nationals from becoming members of parliament, but the Australian Electoral Commission can not check on the nationality of candidates. They must rely on people telling the truth when they sign the declaration that they are eligible to stand for election to parliament.
This campaign is to raise money to lodge advertisements in national newspapers and to get legal advice on the processes we can follow calling on Mr Abbott to show he has renounced his British citizenship. If he can not produce the relevant form RN this means he has entered parliament 8 times as a dual national. Once may be construed as a mistake, 8 times is a matter the police should investigate.
I do hope you can help with some money to pressure Mr Abbott to come clean on his nationality status.
