THE WAY OF THE NORTH
A documentary series exploring deep into Northern Ontario's largely unknown Polar Bear Provincial Park. Observing the small community of Peawanuck and their traditional native culture. Filming everything from moose and caribou hunting to leisure activities and community gatherings. With its stunning treeless tundra and rare wildlife, The Way of The North will leave you speechless with its beauty and its captivating glimpse into northern native culture.
HOST:
Native Peawanuck resident Sam Hunter will be our main guide through this journey. Hunter was born and raised in the wilderness; his survival skills are natural to him. His teaching methods are very practical and hands-on. Hunter is most comfortable outdoors -- it’s where he belongs. Sam will help Mariah along her journey giving the audience the feel as if they are learning with her.
CO-HOST:
Metis Torontonian Mariah MacDonald will be our co-host. Living in the city, she doesn’t get the chance to experience the outdoor lifestyle very often. We will follow her trying to keep up with Sam as they explore Northern Ontario.
WE NEED YOUR HELP:
We are asking for your help to raise the funds for our Pilot episode of The Way of the North. This documentary series is something we feel very passionate about, but this journey is costly and we need help. Travel costs to Peawanuck can reach $3000 for a round trip from Timmins, ON. Peawanuck is a small community located on the south shore of Hudson's Bay. Due to it's remote location, there are no connecting roads. The only way of travel is by bush plane.
We will be taking trips into the wilderness for up to 10 days in a row, with no communication with the rest of the world and no modern conveniences. We will require generators and special equipment to ensure a safe and successful shoot.
Help us share our journey, educating others on Canadian Native culture.
In this Pilot Episode, we will be joining Sam Hunter and other Peawanuck residents in their annual spring goose hunting. This episode will include each step along the goose hunting journey - such as canoeing a couple hours to Hudson's Bay, hunting, and setting up our camp.
Your support will help us get the best out of our time up north. The funding would be going towards travel costs for a crew member - as well as craft, and outdoor equipment.
As seen in the video attached, Sam will often take his camera with him on his journey but he needs crew members in order to capture the best moments while he does his thing - whether it be hunting, fishing or scaring away Polar Bears.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Life in Peawanuck can be dangerous, as most depend on hunting to feed their families. Residents will take hunting trips for up to 10 days, taking only a few items that will fit on their canoe. Located in Northern Ontario's Polar Bear Provincial Park, it is common to see Polar Bears roaming around. They are known as the worlds largest predator - they can be very dangerous. You need to have the skills and experience that Sam has to be out in this land by yourself.
CREW:
We are a small team of skilled professionals - we are all alumni of Toronto Film School. We have each successfully completed multiple projects.
Sam Hunter - Host/Director/Producer/Camera
Mariah MacDonald - Co-Host/Producer/Camera
