“WriteGirl is an excellent program where I learned to express myself and let my voice rise. I learned to let my feelings flow and not hide anything.”
– Eva, age 15
WHAT IS WRITEGIRL?
Imagine 200 women and girls in one room, writing and sharing their ideas. Sometimes the room is filled with chatter and laughter, and at other times, you can feel the intensity of pens scribbling on pages in a silent room. One Saturday each month, WriteGirl brings professional women writers and teen girls together to explore Fiction, or Songwriting, or Journalism, or Poetry.
Imagine a girl working with a writer at a coffee shop or library, crafting a scene from overheard conversation, or editing a poem about her mother’s red bean stew. Every week, WriteGirl pairs are diving into writing projects, learning from each other and sharing their ideas. You might have walked right past one of our pairs when you got your last latte!
Since 2001, WriteGirl has been giving girls the power of the pen, and their own voices, to help them write their way to brilliant futures. For 13 years, we have guided 100% of our teen girls to NOT ONLY graduate from high school, but also enroll in college. (In Los Angeles, the graduation rate is 67%, it’s not pretty.) WriteGirl has never turned a girl away and refuses to leave any girl in the program behind.
Won’t you join us in launching our FOURTEENTH season of workshops and mentoring for girls?
BUY A POEM. HELP A GIRL.
When you buy a poem, your contribution is helping us meet our goal of raising $10,000 to get our next season up and running in October. We need to recruit and train women writers to become effective mentors, we need intensive outreach to girls in need, and we need office supplies (think lots of paper and ink!), just for starters.
This is our 3rd annual WriteGirl Poetry Drive. Our last two drives launched two incredible seasons (several Posse Scholarships for our girls, a trip to the White House for an award from Michelle Obama, founder Keren Taylor named a CNN Hero, and support from artists including Lykke Li, Troian Bellasario, Wilson Bethel…). Who knows what amazingness is ahead for our girls this season?
And you are going to love your poem….even just ten dollars snags you a fresh poem, written by a real WriteGirl teen. Some of our girls will be writing your poem at home at the kitchen table, but we’ll also be bringing together a group of girls for several full-day writingpaloozas at the WriteGirl headquarters here in downtown Los Angeles. Wherever they are, they will be writing poems in their own unique style, just for you!
We're even offering a “Girl Perspective” poem that will be written for a daughter, niece, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister or friend. Help a friend with a poem about inner-strength, or give a young girl a poem about individuality that she can tape to her mirror.
WRITEGIRL WORKS
WriteGirl gives every girl a ton of workshops and individual guidance to help her on her path to college and beyond.

WriteGirl harnesses the talent of some of LA's most well-known women writers, bringing them to workshops as guest mentors. Screenwriters like Nancy Meyers, journalists like Patt Morrison, songwriters like Allee Willis, and poets like Suzanne Lummis not only share their expertise, but also inspire a population of girls who may never have imagined themselves as writers. These mentors show the girls what they're capable of creating.
At our annual songwriting workshop, for instance, singer/songwriters help girls craft a song in four hours. The workshop culminates in renowned singer/songwriters taking to the stage and performing the girls’ work, on the spot, in real time. It’s electric, and unforgettable. Our girls leave with the biggest smiles on their faces, and the confidence that their words and their experiences have the power to move people.
WHO ARE THE GIRLS THAT WRITEGIRL HELPS?
Many of our girls come from some of the highest density schools in the country. Our girls love to write and come to us looking for guidance and role models to help them achieve their creative dreams. They have a voice that they want to share, but are in need of a supportive and inspiring environment. They are smart, funny, shy, loud, strong, unique and everything in between. (Now you want one of their poems more than ever, right?)

“I’ve had a whole group of people supporting me, believing in me. I knew I couldn’t, and wouldn’t, let them down.”
– Jacqueline, 16, WriteGirl mentee
“WriteGirl encourages me to write without a filter, to brainstorm without restriction. I am bolder when I do not edit, when I allow the words to flow freely.”
— Sierra, 17, WriteGirl mentee
