Short Summary
My name is Natasha Rickman. I am a professional actress and director and I am asking for your help to fund core production costs for Twelfth Night: A Gender Experiment.
This will be four versions of a 90 minute Twelfth Night playing in rep at the Rose Theatre, Bankside in London from 6-30 October 2015. The versions will be all male, all female, cast play own gender and cast play opposite gender. The production is designed to serve as a direct comparison and experiment to inform the ongoing discussion about cross gender and same sex productions of classical workaround the world, in particular Shakespeare.
What We Need & What You Get
- We are asking for £2730 for core production costs (costume, insurance, publicity, lights). Any additional money will go into our other fundraising activities for creatives wages.
- We are offering you unique experiences to interact and get involved in our rehearsals and discussions on a deeper level, along with unique memorabilia of the event.
- If we don't reach our entire goal, the funds we do raise will still make a huge impact on the production costs we need to realise this production
The Impact
- This production is not only designed to be a piece of entertainment but to challenge audiences (as well as our cast and creatives) to really examine what it means to perform Shakespeare and classical work in the modern world. Do we need to cross gender cast? How does it affect the piece when we do? What direct comparisons can we make when all four versions run in rep? As well as a piece of fast paced, fun and playful theatre, this will also serve as a 3D piece of walking talking theatrical research we hope will help audiences, researchers and theatre professionals in their discussions around casting in the classical repertoire. We don't have all the answers but we need your help to find some of them out!
- Our producer and director has previously produced short sell out runs at the Mercury Studio Theatre, Camden People's Theatre and RADA Festival, and regularly produces theatre discussions, readings and new writing nights promoting gender equality onstage. Our cast are a phenomenal group of some of the most exciting UK theatre actors, both new and established.

This is an experiment so the technique for rehearsals and technical rehearsals is very different to other shows!
But we think that's what makes it so exciting and please rest assured we have put together a thorough schedule and technique for the way this show will be realised by dividing rehearsals and tech into strictly managed sections.
