Short Summary
Uprising is a new play by Samantha Lee Manas and Jasmine Brown that combines the lessons of the turn of the century labor movement and Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire with a look at labor today in an innovative way. Live theater scenes about the uprising and fire will be interwoven with interviews with labor leaders and historians to help us look at labor from both a historical and modern viewpoint. This play not only will show what people can achieve when they band together, but what young women can achieve almost entirely on their own. No matter what side of the issue you are on, labor is currently both losing and gaining ground. Let's take a deeper look together. Thank you for your support!

The Impact
Uprising will explore an important issue in the life of workers and politics today, while encouraging further discussion on the usefulness of unions and what acceptable working conditions should be. In the tradition of playwrights like Brecht, we strive to bring about a play that will cause the audience to think and afterward act on those thoughts.
Between Us Productions is committed to bringing daring and compelling theater to our audiences and pushing our boundaries as artists. Likewise, it is important to us to support artists who share our commitment to performing relevant work. Since its inception in 2010, Between Us has presented two full length productions, two 10 minute play festivals, one evening of one acts, and countless readings and variety shows. Uprising will mark their third full production.
Risks & Challenges
The largest risk of this piece is that we may be sending a message that will not appeal to all. Unions and the labor movement have become such divisive issues that no matter what stance you take, not everyone will agree. However, we welcome this discussion and are hoping that the risk will pay off when this play becomes a catalyst for further discussion of the issue.
