The USS FLIER (SS 250) was one of 52 US Submarine Fleet boats that went down during WWII. We seek your help bringing her story to life:
Greetings from the USS Silversides Submarine Museum! We write to you to offer you an opportunity to participate in the creation of a new and outstanding exhibit honoring the men who survived and perished on the USS FLIER when it stuck a mine on August 13th 1944. The FLIER was on patrol in the Philipine Islands when she went down with 78 of her men. Eight men escaped and survived. One of those men was young Ensign Alvin Jacobson Jr. of Grand Haven Michigan.
The exhibit will be dedicated to the brave men of the FLIER who gave their lives for this country and the eight survivors who were eventually rescued and returned to the United States.
The Board of the Silversides Museum is committed to make this exhibit come alive and honor the brave men who were on the USS FLIER. Currently a display of their pictures and biography is on exhibit in the upper concourse of the museum. The new exhibit, scheduled to open in the next few months, will graphically display the patrol, the crew, the damaging explosion when the FLIER hit the mine and the circumstances surrounding the eventual rescue of the eight men who were blown off the submarine.
An exhibit like this one can only be created by individuals of families who understand the sacrifices these men made for this country. We invite you to be a part of the financial support team that honors these men. Please join me, the Board of Directors and two foundations that have committed funds to support this demonstration of our faith and belief in a free country for which these men gave their lives.
Sincerely,
Frank P. Marczak, Ed.D
