Vietnam 40 Years Later

During the early 1970s, the Nixon Administration instituted a draft lottery to determine who would be inducted into the military. It was an era of high-anxiety for young men like me who were not eager to be sent to Vietnam. I got lucky, drew a high draft number and avoided military service.

Even so, the war and this far-away country had a demonstrative effect on my life, galvanizing my interest in politics and propelling me into an award-winning journalism career that included time as a Washington correspondent. My interest in Vietnam followed me through my career, and in 2005, I made my first photo-shooting trip there, a life-changing experience that became the starting point for an eight-year exploration of this beautiful Southeast Asian nation.

And there, I found a story that needs to be told: Vietnam is no longer a war. It is a country -- one that is dynamic, moving forward and eager to be a full-fledged member of the global economy.

I am passionate about telling this historic story with my photography, and I need your help. This will be an important book, because it will help update Americans on what has happened to Vietnam in the last 40 years. Along with our courageous Vietnam War Veterans and our Vietnamese-American fellow citizens, Americans continue to heal from this tragic period in our history. It is my hope that my book will contribute to this healing, as knowing more about this country leads to understanding and reconciliation.

This is not an ask for a contribution. Instead, I'm calling on you to make a pre-publication purchase of my book so that I can pay for my portion of the publication costs. Typically, publishers ask photographers and artists to finance 50 percent of the printing costs. Your purchase will help me make my commitment to my publisher and bring my book to market.

If you make a pre-publication purchase, you will receive an autographed copy of the book that will not be available from book sellers. Additionally, I am including prints in these pre-publication packages at prices that will represent a significant value once print prices are raised after publication. These prints come from a portfolio collected by the Library of Congress.

I am very excited to have Damiani Editore of Italy as my publisher. Damiani is one of the world's most prestigious publishers of art and photography books and I know that Vietnam 40 Years Later is going to be a beautiful publication with about 100 compelling color photographs. It also will contain a forward by Andrew Lam, an award-winning Vietnamese-American author. Lam's forward, along with my own essay, will be accompanied by a collection of portraits of Vietnamese people from all walks of life.

Together, I hope this package will help Americans give up their horrific war-era memories of Vietnam in favor of a more hopeful view. Please help me bring this book to print with your purchase today.
