Hi there…we’re John Sparks, Jake Anthony and Patricia Zehentmayr—book writer, composer, and lyricist (respectively)—and that’s the question our protagonist John has to answer in our musical Wanting Miss Julie, currently having it’s first full production at the Loft Ensemble in downtown Los Angeles (Saturdays and Sundays through May 8th, tickets available at www.loftensemble.com.) After having done many staged readings and workshop productions of this show both in Los Angeles and Chicago, we can’t begin to tell you how exciting/overwhelming it is to see the piece in a fully staged production, complete with lighting, costumes, choreography, and a fully orchestrated score…with a BAND! 

Recording the score!

So of course, in the middle of our inaugural six week run, we’re starting to think about future productions (“limitless possibilities” right?), and we thought: we have a fully rehearsed band and a fantastic cast—let’s make a complete recording of the score! In the past, we’d made some simple piano/vocal demos, but this Julie that’s on stage now has new songs, new lyrics; it barely resembles the piece we hear in previous recordings. Over the years that we have been workshopping  this show we have had many requests from audience members to have a recording of the score- but we've been reluctant to share our piano demos because they were only a sketch of our total vision. The future of Julie

So…the next logical step in the evolution of Wanting Miss Julie is a fully produced recording of the entire score. In today’s theater market, new musicals are a hard sell. Producers, Artistic Directors—they all want to know exactly what they’re getting when they take a chance on a new show. Piano recordings, while they've gotten us this far, aren't enough anymore. Furthermore, the music of Julie comes alive in living color in its orchestrations in a way we don’t get in the piano version of the score. A soulful clarinet wail transports us to a seedy jazz club, where Julie serenades us with a torchy ballad. Castanets power Julie’s tango, as she attempts her first seduction of the unwitting John.  The flute soothes Julie into a numb reverie, while she waits for her long lost mother to return.   THIS version of the score reflects Wanting Miss Julie in its current (and strongest) form, and this orchestrated version is the one that will secure future productions.

Where the funding goes

 So here’s where YOU come in. We need to raise $2300 to make this recording happen. The funding will go studio rental, a sound engineer, musicians and vocalists. And by helping us reach this goal, you’ll get to hear the finished tracks, in their fully orchestrated and fully mixed glory!

And if we happen to surpass our goal, we’ve got plenty of ideas to make the cast recording even more spectacular! 

The score of a musical lives in two places: one--the theaters in which it is being performed, and two--in a recording. These recording will help to perpetuate both. Let’s be honest: we’re not trying to change the world here…it's just musical theatre!
