Overview
This is a fundraising campaign about 'WARN'D IN VAIN' , a book with a NYC story by Charalampos Kydonakis aka dirtyharrry. You can check the video above and the story below for the full description.

Who ?

Born and raised in Crete, I studied architecture in Thessaloniki, currently living & working in Crete. I 'm inspired by the works of Sam Peckinpah, Akira Kurosawa, Luis Buñuel, Nikos Kazantzakis, Weegee, Diane Arbus, Cristobal Hara, Martin Parr, Mark Cohen and others.

What ?

I asked two of my favorite childhood books to help me put my thoughts together on paper; 'Warn'd in Vain' - the book of this campaign - is a NYC story inspired by the Argonautic myth. It is a twin book of 'Back to Nowhere', a parallel Minotaur tale from Crete, hopefully to be published at some moment in the future.

'Warn'd in Vain' book :

  • photographs & design by dirtyharrry
  • A5 size
  • 116 color images from NYC in 160 pages
  • the campaign is about an edition of 1000 copies, the final number of copies might be less depending on the final amount raised

Where  / When?

'Back to Nowhere' was made between 2009-2017 in Crete;  the only place I 'll never have the chance to see how it looks in the eyes of a stranger.

'Warn'd in Vain' is a stranger's questionmark inside the world's most photographed city; made between the years 2014-2017 that I spent 7 months on the other side of the ocean.

Ground Zero, 2016

Why ?

I never considered photography as a project or a hobby, I always felt it is a world of no borders & limits or a motive that could keep me moving towards this world. With these 2 books I would like to put aside what I did in the last 10 years and try to move forward.

Queens , 2017

How ?

Since I got back from NYC last year I started editing & designing these 2 books, now I 'm trying to self-publish the first one through this fundraising campaign.

    If ?

This campaign will run with the 'fixed funding' (all or nothing) way; if it doesn't reach its goal, I 'll have to find other ways to make the book, since the printing/transfer/shipping costs are more than what I can fund by myself. Making the 'Warn'd in Vain' book with the help of this campaign will be a first step for the future printing of  'Back to Nowhere' too. By backing this campaign you will be charged only if the campaign reaches its goal. Any help by purchasing something from the items described above or spreading the word about this campaign is much appreciated.

    Thank you

    h.

Some words by Gus Powell from a 2016 Time magazine article :

' I had a great uncle Frank “Yaki” Yakimovich whom I met only once at a family reunion in 1982. He was what you call a rock hound. I remember he led me to his faded Arizona car, opened the trunk, and pulled out a roundish rock, a hammer, and a chisel. With a single strike, he cracked open the rock. The center was luminous with crystals. “It’s a geode!” Uncle Yaki put it in my hand. I stared at it, and at him, and then back at the rock. My eight-year-old mind was blown. I have never looked at a rock the same way. The work of Charalampos “Harry” Kydonakis makes me think of geodes and the wonder I felt when I first encountered them. Harry doesn’t use photography to stop time and describe space. He uses his camera and flash like a hammer and chisel to crack open time and space. He shows you what was there, and then he shows you a bit more than what was there. The work has some of the moody beauty I see in Gueorgui Pinkhassov, the deep regional and narrative integrity I feel from Cristóbal Hara, and the raunchy dark comedy of late Philip Guston. When Harry, who is known as “dirty harrry” online, speaks about his photographs he talks about “his island” and “his village.” He talks about girls, animals, and shadows. The pictures have details that repel and attract; they have a smell, they have a breeze. The more you look at the work, the more you think that there is indeed an island, a village, that looks like this all the time. A place where faces go black or are lit from below, where animals and kites appear unexpectedly, where people from the present, past, and future mingle. His pictures flirt with the ironic, at times they border on the insane, and yet the car stays on the road... I believe in this place, Kydonakis’ island, pictures that make me feel like I’m moving back and forth between the concrete and the imagined, revealing depths that surprise and inspire. I believe that Kydonakis knows how to find and open geodes. '
