In 1970s San Francisco, a passive housewife questions her marriage after embarking on a psychedelic journey with a trio of witchy hippies.
About the Film
“Women are from Venus” is a Chapman University advanced production film directed by Maks Halpin and produced by Macy Bernstein. The script was written by Sarah Bloom, who was one of Maks’s first friends upon coming to Chapman. The two have been working on this script since the beginning of quarantine, and since have evolved and developed it based around their own experiences and insights found throughout the pandemic.
Although Reba, the main character, is a housewife in her late 20s, Maks and Sarah find little pieces of themselves within her, which has made the development experience even more special. Sarah comes from a long line of submissive women who served their families and devoted themselves to the home. This film reflects her staunch refusal to join the line, and her mission to find a freer way to be in love and a woman.
This film delves into themes such as love, identity, insecurity, conformity, and femininity all through the lens of psychedelic healing. Maks was inspired to tell this story after reading “How to Change Your Mind”, a nonfiction book by journalist Michael Pollan, which details the things that psychedelic drugs, such as mushrooms, can teach us about consciousness, mental illness, and our minds as a whole. We aim to cast a positive light on the psychedelic journey, as it can prove to be a catalyst for positive growth and revitalization (when used responsibily).
“Women are from Venus” is seeking the help of friends and family to help make our vision a reality! We have a flexible goal of $600, which will complete our overall budget of around $4500. The money raised here will go directly towards the making of the film!
