How does it work?

Simple. Turn the board on, connect to your Wi-Fi network and pair mobile devices and other WriteBoards. You are good to go!
Anything written on your WriteBoard will instantly be visible, in your handwriting, on your mobile devices through the mobile app. Within the app, you are able to write notes and erase, instantly editing the content on the actual WriteBoard. You will also be able to snap photographs and pin them to your WriteBoard. A key feature is that multiple WriteBoards will be able to be linked and synced, which means that if you have offices in a various countries or cities, anything written on a Whiteboard in one office, will instantly be visible on the WriteBoards linked elsewhere, as well as connected devices through the app.

Geo-Specific Advertising

WriteBoard will offer Geo-specific Advertising which will consist of small, periodic pop-up adverts that will appear in the bottom left of the surface only when the user is actively engaging with the board. If the user wants to learn more about the deal, they tap the ad to expand it, or swipe it away to dismiss it. These ads will offer specials that will increase the utility of the user, however, if they do not want to see them, the user can turn them off.

Varying Sizes:
We plan to launch with a 27" WriteBoard. However, as we have seen with whiteboards and chalkboards, people require different sizes to suit their needs. Due to this, we aim to launch a larger WriteBoard once the first size is a success.

Snap a photo on your mobile device and instantly pin it to your WriteBoard
Pin-to-Board:
We will allow users, through the WriteBoard app, to take photographs and immediately pin it to their WriteBoard surface.
Follow Someone's Board:
As an added, social feature, we will offer the ability to make your WriteBoard public, allowing others to follow you and witness your ideas being generated and scribbled. We think this will be an extremely popular feature, whereby celebrities will be able to write a note, in their handwriting, to their fans, who will instantly see it on the WriteBoard app and be able to share it on other social media platforms. At the moment, celebrities tweet and communicate with fans in a manner that is digitised through font. Never before has there been such a personal manner to address millions of people: simply write a note to them.
But why not a really big Tablet?

WriteBoard is a modern-day, powerful and technology-fuelled improvement and replacement of the whiteboard and chalkboard. At no point will it become a large tablet. The reasons for this align with the reasons why the whiteboard and chalkboard has stood the test of time:

The WriteBoard will be Communal: Numerous people in a room will be able to instantly put all their creative energy into one surface and use this surface as a communal hub of collective creative energy. However, unlike a chalkboard or whiteboard, the work noted on this surface will not be lost when the team leaves the office. As they scribble on the board, the WriteBoard servers are instantly syncing with their respective Whiteboard apps.

Simplicity: The whiteboard and chalkboard are extremely simple, yet have stood the test of time. Why fix something that is not broken? In today's modern world, we are flooded with new gadgets and devices. Wouldn't it be nice to have something familiar and easy to use? Wouldn't it be great to simply jot down an idea in your own handwriting, without having to boot up and log in and instantly have those ideas available to view, edit and share when you are not near your board? The WriteBoard will also be incredibly easy to use, allowing individuals of all tech skill level to simply write notes and view them later, without having to navigate through a complicated operating system and download applications on the surface.

Familiarity: The whiteboard and chalkboard has been around longer the WriteBoard team have been alive for. These tools are familiar and loved by millions around the world. We do not want to deviate from these personal and popular surfaces, we simply want to improve on their efficiency and uses.

Price: The WriteBoard is a premium, brushed aluminium consumer product that will complement any boardroom, classroom or home. The design is sleek, minimal and beautiful. However, the 27" WriteBoard will be cheaper than the retail price of top 10" tablets, despite the larger HD display, touch panel and significant use of quality materials.
Product Development Process
- All hardware details and design elements have been finalised. We have produced a handful of brushed aluminium prototypes that model the final Industrial Design of the product.

An early Stylus Prototype. We also milled it from Solid Aluminium and applied an anodized finish. It's the perfect companion to WriteBoard and will be available separately as a perk if you pledge $15.
- The WriteBoard Operating System and Back-end of the WriteBoard Mobile Application (for iOS and Android) has been completed.
- The sync with the WriteBoard server is operating. There exists a few seconds delay in the syncing process which we are working on improving.
- We have refined the PCB and internal electronic components.

We remapped the Open Source PCB layout of the Raspberry Pi and added in a beefier ARM CPU + GPU and more RAM, to ensure that writing on the Touch Screen is buttery smooth and responsive.
Why do we need funds?

We need funds to take WriteBoard to the next step.
Our PCB, Touch Screen and Aluminium Shell all need to be integrated into a single, seamless entity. You can help us to refine WriteBoard so that we can make our product as best as possible.
We need to finalise mass production strategies and align ourselves with partners who can assist in certain aspects of the manufacturing process. Your contributions will drive the production price of the electronic and mechanical components right down, allowing us to offer a premium product at an affordable price.
The server will be updated and sync times improved. We will seek expert advice to make optimizations to the WriteBoard OS, and our Companion Apps need slight refinements before they are published.
We believe that, with the necessary funds at our disposal, we can turn this system into a commercially available product by Q2 2015. Due to the relatively small market in South Africa (in terms of individuals in a position to utilise and purchase this board), we aim to launch in the USA and Europe initially. We have pending meetings scheduled with large, global venture capitalist firms, who are using this campaign as a proxy as to whether an investment in WriteBoard will be successful.
Our targeted retail price of the WriteBoard is $299. The app is free to download and link. We are contemplating making the ability to link multiple WriteBoards a premium service, which will cost $5 per year to the user. In addition, we believe the recurring income model WriteBoard possesses through the Geo-Specific Advertising is an incredible financial strength to this startup.
Meet the Team

The WriteBoard team is comprised of 3 young individuals, determined to make an impact through the design and implementation of consumer products that are useful, efficient, beautiful and powerful. All 3 team members are completing studies at the University of Cape Town, in South Africa.

David Lindeque and Nicholas Rout share a close history. Both call Durban, Kwa Zulu Natal home and attended Clifton College in Durban for their high school education. Classmates and friends from day 1, these two immediately struck up a competitive drive between them, often competing to outperform each other in subjects such as Mathematics and Design & Technology. David is currently completing his Bachelor degree in Finance and Economics, while Nick is completing his Bachelor degree in Computer Engineering.
Olivia Pougnet is the South African transplant. Hailing from the island paradise of Mauritius, she moved to Cape Town to study at UCT, where she is completing her Bachelor degree in Psychology and Organisational Psychology. Extremely close friends with Nick and Dave, she adds the female touch to the team and generates ideas that the more technical-minded boys may not have thought of.

Nick and Dave have already proven they have the determination, skills and vision to take an idea and turn it into a reality. David founded a company called Zest Mobile, which is an African smartphone developer that empowers Africans through developing and offering powerful, yet affordable devices.
