The Story

“I am an Arab volunteer, I came to Spain to defend Cairo in Barcelona, Damascus in Toledo and Baghdad in Madrid.” Najati Sidki (in 1936).

Imagine that your father is a Palestinian Arab, but he had decided to fight against Franco in Spanish Civil War. Imagine that you have siblings, but you can’t talk with them because you don’t speak the same language. Imagine that you have a family but you were raised without parents...

“You Come From Far Away” tells the extraordinary story of a Palestinian family: the father, Najati Sidki, was a Palestinian communist who came to Spain as a volunteer to fight against Franco in 1936. The family was dispersed by several turmoils that steer the last century starting by the Spanish Civil War, and goes on with World War II, Nakba, Lebanese Civil War, etc. As if the 20th century was summed up in the life of a single family. Dulia (Dawlat in Arabic), the eldest daughter, was lost in Russia after the Spanish Civil War and separated from the family for 20 years.

The film also remind us the fact that the Arabs were fighting for the future of European people long before they become unwanted refugees at its borders. Najati Sidki was one of those unknown Arab heroes who paid a high price for his decision.

Background

History usually has associated the Arabs’ role in the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) with the Moroccan troops who were brought to Spain by Franco in order to fight against the Republicans’ government. This image has predominated during the last decades, overshadowing the other Arabs’ existence among the international volunteers.

In fact, more than one thousand people had come from Iraq, Morocco, Lebanon, Palestine, Egypt, Algeria, etc. in order to defend the Republic and democracy against Franco. Some of them were killed or disappeared just like other comrades in Madrid, Aragón, Andalusia and Catalonia, while others returned to their countries after the war.

Who were those Arabs? Why did they come to fight and to die defending democracy in a distant country? The documentary tries to answer these questions, through the story of Najati Sidki, a Palestinian journalist and the former secretary of the Palestine Communist Party.

Why is your contribution important?

The historical research of the story is already done with the support of Fundación Euroárabe, based in Granada. “You Come From Far Away” is selected also among the projects, which are going to be supported by Screen Institute Beirut. 50% of the filming is already done. However, the existing budget is far from covering the full production.

We need your support in order to continue filming in Moscow, Beirut and Spain.

The film will be completed in 2016.
