2002, Cargill built a freighter loading port on the conflux of the Amazon and Trapajos rivers. This immediately caused a land grab wherein hundreds of extremely poor land owners were paid pennies per acre for their land. Subsequently this land was burned and turned into Soy fields. A highway was built to accommodate the 300 trucks daily from as far way as 3,000 kilometers. These roads are dangerous with routine fatalities. The toll has been heavy.
In 2008 Greenpeace negotiated a moratorium to halt the deforestation. Which, on the surface, appears to be working. However, it is our assertion this was designed to be nothing short of a media trojan horse. paving way for what is coming this spring --An expansion from producing just 1 mil. kilotons of soy, to 10, mil.
This is going to take a lot of land to produce. By a factor of ten.
We
have discovered the intent of an unknown muli-national corporation to
build not one, but three new grain loaders. The plan includes using
land currently owned by, again the extremely poor. (It also happens
to be the end stop of a flight path and a flood plain- tidal estuary,
but that almost a side note) the result will be the permeant eviction
of 10k to 25k people into projects -- homes which measure 12' x 12'
less than 4' apart. in groups of ten thousand.
Why
then, were the projects, which now sit empty, constructed?
The
flow of information, which seems to change at every station is as
follows. The corporations are telling the City officials that
Santarem will become the greatest port city in the Amazon, perhaps.
But at what cost to the environment and the residents of the
area?
From there the city officials are negotiating with the
neighborhood presidents, ten of them to broker the sale of the land.
The looming threat in motion is and has been used in the past
is, they will lose the land regardless. take the offer. In some
cases the neighborhood presidents are brokering these trades for the
residents without their consent or knowledge.
Most don't know the status of their property.
At
this time, many of the residents who have been there for generations
have no reord of their ownership, these documents simply do not
exist, in many instances. Those with documents are being lied to
about what will be coming -- Jobs and prosperity.
The Plan
The goal of this is not to simply create a film, but to create an outcry so loud the people of this region will be offered a fighting chance. This film will act as alarm to bring attention and awareness to this great injustice about to befall these people. At this very moment, the residents of these ten neighbors face removal, displacement and the loss of nearly all worldly possessions. This is truly a David and Goliath story, with the exception that David knew he was fighting a giant, the majority of these people are unaware of the impending destruction.
We want to inform and empower people. First, to realize they are not powerless regarding their property, livelihood and ultimately, their pursuit of happiness. Secondly, as a call-to-arms, moreover a personal empowerment towards one-on-one interaction with those whom, directly or indirectly, effect the quality of your life.
A difficult road ahead !
Of
the many obstacles in our path, the foremost is the way things happen
in this part of the world. With this story there is no
shortage of avenues which lead to corruption and exploitation.
Moreover, there is largely an overtone of that's the way it is and
there really isn't anything you can do about it.
We beg to
differ...
First we need to produce the film, then we need to go far and wide.
PHASE ONE - shooting the film
Production expenses -
PHASE TWO -making the film
Total $100,200
