Nearing the End!
Thank you so much for checking out my campaign, and for sharing it. We're in the last week, so if you've been waiting to contribute, now is the time!
I've been combing through my images taken in Nova Scotia, and have so much material for projects to last me through the rest of the year. I'm also anxiously watching over a batch of bioluminescent mushrooms that I started from a sterile culture during my residency, and will be exploring paper, ink, and dyes made from mushrooms that I'll be cultivating and harvesting over the winter and next spring.
I've listed a special perk for the end of the campaign: your choice of three limited-edition, leather bound accordion fold books! I'm so very happy with them. I love presenting images in book forms--it allows for more intimate viewing and participation from the viewer. These are really special, and I hope you'll grab one before they're gone.
Update!
Hello! I'm having an amazing residency experience, and am so grateful to my supporters! I have been trekking through the bio regions of Nova Scotia, learning about bioluminescence, tides, squids, and other things that make this area so special. I've harvested birch bark and constructed wee little accordion fold books. I'm in the midst of experimenting with dyes made from mushrooms, and we'll be attempting to make some paper from mushrooms tomorrow.
Along the way, I've made some splendid photographs that I'm very excited about. You can have one for your very own! Check out the perks for supporting my project.
Summary
I'm an artist and a teacher. I've been invited to be one of five artists participating in an artist residency in Wolfville, Nova Scotia this summer. With local scientists and experts, we will explore the Bay of Fundy region, home to the world's biggest tides, amazing fossils, and a host of Canadian wildlife.
Biophilia is open to artists who explore natural themes in their work. Attending artists will have time to work on individual projects while also getting valuable time to collaborate with each other. We will also work with experts in astronomy, biology, botany, mycology, and geology, gaining insight and inspiration for future projects. I'm so excited to see new landscapes, including some ancient sea beds and fossils I've never viewed in real life. I'll be exploring the topography and how the flora and fauna settle into it, looking for ways to extend my work. The residency will also give me great connections with like-minded artists, and who knows where that can lead.
This is a terrific opportunity for me to push my work further. I have three significant gallery shows in 2015-16, including my first solo show. This residency is a perfect catalyst for the work I'll need to complete in the next few months.
What I Need and How Much it Costs
I've never been to Nova Scotia. One thing I've discovered is it's about as far away from SW Oregon as a body can get in North America before ending up in Greenland. I have travel and residency expenses to cover:
- $1000 residency fee to pay for residency expenses
- $1100 airfare (RT Portland to Halifax)
- $535 for lodging during travel to and from the residency
- $100 for ground transportation and meals not covered by residency
Total funding needed: $2735
I'm eligible for up to $1500 from a faculty professional development fund via my college. I've applied for this grant, but receiving it isn't a certainty and it won't cover the entire expense. There are no other applicable grant opportunities at this time, so I'm looking to raise the funds via my work.
What's in it for you? No chocolate bars or wrapping paper here--you'll get art! All funds will be used to pay for the residency and the production/shipping of thank you gifts. Any additional funds will go towards printing and framing works from the residency for exhibition.
HUGE Thanks!
I'm offering some great perks in exchange for your support; be sure to check them out in that section.
Other Ways You Can Help
I know we all get hit up for money on a regular basis, and appreciate that many folks have no funds to give. You can always help by sharing my campaign! I so appreciate you for reading about my project, and I hope you'll follow along as this residency leads me in new artistic directions.
