Would you say I have a plethora of piñatas?

Help us put together Austin’s first-ever Piñata Picnic on Saturday, November
14th, 2015! In collaboration with Big Medium and the East Austin Studio Tour, we are inviting Austinites, old and new, to come out to Edward Rendon Sr. Park
where they can destroy piñatas to their hearts’ content while
they relax and picnic on the waterfront in Austin’s East Side.
We ❤ Piñatas
Between October 17th and November 22nd, visitors will find a small herd of massive piñata burros grazing in Edward Rendon Sr. Park on Town Lake. They are part of our Las Piñatas art installation, a commission by City Of Austin Arts in Public Places Program and an official stop on part of the the East Austin Studio Tour (EAST).

When a pair of transplanted property developers unjustly
demolished local piñata store Jumpolin in early 2015, a fire was lit under the
East Austin community to reset the course of the city's growth.
Austin’s growth is a reality. But for Austin’s growth story to be
considered a success, we believe the city must respect its past as much as it
anticipates its own future. The Las Piñatas art
installation is designed to preserve the memory of Jumpolin so that Austinites,
both new and old, will discover a shared
responsibility in shaping the city’s expansion.
You are a part of Austin's growth story, a story that begins with the local quirks and traditions that make this city great. Together,
we will celebrate the humble piñata as a symbol
of Austin's vibrant East Side community.
The plan, and why we want your help
On Saturday, November 14th the Las Piñatas site will be a gathering spot for Austinites to come out to picnic and break piñatas on the beautiful waterfront of Edward Rendon Sr. Park. (more details on our FB page)
BECOME A PIÑATA PATRON! Help us buy as many piñatas as
possible to hand out to children and families to break during the Piñata
Picnic in a celebration of Austin's vibrant East Side. Your contribution
will have a direct impact on the community, as we will source all
piñatas from Jumpolin and other local businesses in the
neighborhood.
All donations will be used to buy piñatas and the materials we
need for this event. Should we end up with leftover piñatas from the event,
they will be donated to neighborhood schools and community groups. A portion of all proceeds will also benefit Latino in Architecture's Summer UTSoA Program Scholarship.
Our sponsors and partners
We want to thank our sponsors and partners that made Las Piñatas possible.
