Bleak was inspired by Downwell, The Binding of Isaac, and my personal financial struggles. You play as a small creature, who is just one of thousands who are sent into the dangerous caverns to retrieve Power Gems. The sole purpose of their existence is to risk their lives to get these gems for The Boss (their ruler). But what happens when you get them all?

Bleak has hand created caverns chosen at random for you to dwell into with each life. Keepers hold the Power Gems and must be destroyed to move onto the next cavern. Some creatures feed off old gems and explode with fragments upon their death. You can collect these fragments and buy upgrades, health, or even an invincible bubble from the shopkeep. Upgrades and bundles of gem fragments can be found in chests left behind from the others before you. Use these to your advantage and get the Power Gems to The Boss!

The Caverns you will be dwelling into are hand created and chosen randomly at the beginning of each level. This take on "random generation" gives me greater control of level design and how you feel going into each level. Below are three different variations of Level 4. Each is balanced in its own way and still provides the same difficulty no matter what!

You are one of thousands sent into the caverns to retrieve the Power Gems.

Gaily is one of the Keepers that you must defeat to collect the Power Gem and move on to the next cavern.

Gordo is another Keeper, he guards his Power Gem with his life.

Plops feed off of gems and produce gem fragments upon their death. Some are afraid of heights but others are a little more adventurous.

Ploppies are the offspring of Plops and usually nest inside the shell of Gaily. They won't live very long outside of their nest.

Taunters are easily the trickiest of the cavern monsters, they appear and disappear out of existence, and are very attracted to you.
