MIKE GARSON on BOWIESONGS1:
"Clifford Slapper has been
playing David Bowie music for many years in England. He has accompanied
many singers doing David Bowie music. His love for his music is very
obvious. His new CD, with many excellent singers each singing one of
David’s songs, is very potent. Cliff plays very well, and it is a
heartfelt recording."
Mike Garson, pianist on 20 David Bowie albums & 9 world tours, 1972 to 2006
Bowiesongs1 is an album which
brings together about 10 very different singers, all with a common passion for
the songs of David Bowie. Each will sing a different Bowie song accompanied
purely by piano. It is completely acoustic and unplugged.
Each song is recorded in the
studio as a live take without overdubs, other instruments or special effects.
This is a huge challenge, but also allows us to strip bare these great songs,
to get to their emotional heart, and hear the genius of Bowie’s songwriting.
This makes this album unusual, unique and different from the many tributes
which have been appearing since the tragic and shocking news of David Bowie’s
passing on 10th January. In fact, some of our tracks were already
recorded before then. We decided to continue with the work. It was always a
labour of love, but has now become also a homage to a lost hero.
All of the singers have great
credentials to be working on such a project. For example, Des De Moor produced
his own album of acoustic Bowie songs several years ago, Darkness &
Disgrace, of which David Bowie himself said: “To hear these songs in such a
personalised context is a real ear-opener. I listened as though someone else
had written them.” And in 2006, Clifford Slapper played piano for Bowie on his last
ever television appearance.
All piano on the album is played by Clifford Slapper. This is what has been said about his playing:
"I really loved your piano. Reminded me of Nicky Hopkins and Leon Russell."
Tony Visconti, one of the world's greatest producers and David Bowie's friend and producer/performer on numerous Bowie albums, 1969-2016.
"Very nice work on that Marc Almond track...you were the standout, for sure."
Mark Plati, producer/performer/mixer with David Bowie, 1996-2003.
“In particular, keyboardist Cliff Slapper provides decorative flourishes, always tasteful and atmospheric...”
MOJO magazine"Mr Clifford Slapper has been adding a touch of class to many late-night establishments for a number of years now. He’s an accomplished pianist with an extensive repertoire.”
