Short Summary

Young Actors Ensemble was founded in 2012 by John Tourtellotte and Tommy Statler as a means of creating theatrical work for people on the early side of their careers. We produced 3 shows within 6 months and met an array of talented people, many whom we still consider friends to this day. After the end of the first season John moved to New York to pursue opportunities on the east coast and Young Actors was put on an indefinite hiatus.

During the fall of 2014 one of our founding players (Dan Gallun) and his friend (Tyler Vaughn) were looking to workshop a production of Boys' Life by Howard Korder. As they went through the process Tommy and his friend (Mark Reichard) joined on to attempt to produce this wonderful show.

As the process got deeper Tommy saw the same fire and passion in these young producers of Dan, Tyler, and Mark that he and John had experienced two years prior. The desire to create a theatrical project(s) that focused on the people involved as opposed to producer's pride.  With John's blessing,  Young Actors Ensemble was reformed for this production. Members of Young Actors from that first season are involved in this production, along with many newer faces that we've met through our friends we made that first season.

Boys' Life is told in a series of fast-paced, sharply etched scenes, the play traces the misadventures of three former college buddies now seeking to make their way in the big city, and with various women of their acquaintance. Moving along briskly, with its mood of satirical humor brilliantly sustained, the play dissects and anatomizes the male narcissism--and protracted adolescence--which characterizes its protagonists.

What We Need & What You Get

We need to raise $2,000 or more for this production. Our costs include:

  • $1,350 for renting of performance space at The Complex
  • $480 for performance rights through Dramatists Play Service
  • $150+ for miscellaneous expenses, including costume and set pieces.

We know how to do theatre on a shoe string budget. Most of our costume and set pieces will be provided from our cast and crew. The two major expenses are obvious, and anything we raise past those points would enable us to widen our aesthetic possibilities around the performance.
There are 6 different "perk" levels of what you will receive from us to show our appreciation for what you give. They are on the right over here ------->
Feel free to peruse, and thank you for your donation.

The Impact

Boys' Life is a satirical look at young male, and female, attitudes towards the opposite sex. The play was originally written and performed in the 1980s, but we still see the behaviors and ideas of these characters in our society today. We want to allow our audience to laugh at the flaws in these characters, while still seeing the truth that we all, at some point or another, have these glitches in ourselves.
