The Bikery is a non-profit volunteer-run community bike kitchen located in Seattle’s Central District. The Bikery empowers Seattle bicyclists and encourages cycling through collaborative hands-on education, social engagement, and fun.
The Bikery has operated in Seattle since 2006, and has enriched the cycling community by:
- Making professional-grade tools available to everyone
-
Providing a welcoming and inclusive workshop for the neighborhood to share
-
Empowering cyclists of all ages, genders and income levels to take control of their means of transportation
-
Creating an environment for people to share and grow knowledge
- Providing an avenue for volunteers to serve their community
As you may have seen recently,
Grist profiled The Bikery as a piece on the new sharing economy. As they aptly put it, "turns out donated bike parts and shop hours don’t pay the bills." We need your help.
The Bikery is reinventing itself to help Seattle meet the transportation challenges of a growing city, and to be a more effective resource for our neighbors. As more people shift towards bicycling as a means of transportation, the Bikery seeks to be a community resource making cycling accessible for everyone, and to help riders understand and maintain their bikes.
We need financial support from our community in order to move forward into a new phase. We’re seeking to raise $10,000 to upgrade our facilities, cover operational costs, and expand our operations. We'll use these funds for the following investments:
-
Redesign our shop, create new workstations and a more well-organized environment
-
Buy a broader set of tools, including an air compressor and additional workstands
-
Pay our rent and other operational expenses. (we'd like soap in our bathroom)
-
Invest in technology that will bring modern wonders like instructional videos, point-of-sale software, and electronic communication into our shop
These upgrades will allow us to do the following:
- Serve more people, more effectively in our shop.
- Engage with additional volunteers, providing valuable work experience and skills.
- Keep more bikes rolling smoothly
- Keep more smiles out there in the world
