Roboy – a robot boy discovers the world
The children's book "Roboy – a robot boy discovers the world" is for children from 5 to 7 years old and tells the story of how the little robot boy sees the world and learns to discover it.
Abstract of the book
Once upon a time, there was a professor whose dream was to build a robot that was just like a human. He should not only be smart and move like a human being, he should also be able to feel and think like one. After many months of hard work and with the assistance of countless scientists they finally made it. The little robot boy got his head attached and for the first time in his life he was seeing the light of day. "He is built to help people with their everyday problems. Like a good friend so to speak“, the professor says and named him Roboy. In the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory Roboy is learning to walk and talk. Also, he’s getting to know other robots like Robodog and Robomoto. Every move he makes has to be programmed by the engineers and computer scientists by hand. In order to collect knowledge and being able to communicate with people someday, the professor is telling him stories about the world outside the laboratory. One day, when the sun was shining even in the most remote corners of the laboratory, Roboy becomes curious. "What a beautiful day," he thinks. "Just once, I would like to smell the flowers, encounter animals and see the flying machines at the airport, of which the professor told me about“. Quietly he sneaks out of the building.
But are people outside the laboratory as friendly to the little robot as the professor? And how will the professor find him again?

As the former communications manager of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory I experienced the development of Roboy first hand. Many scientists, engineers and artists from all around the world worked day and night to bring the robot to life. People from different cultures and languages all had the same identical goal and vision. This fostered an incredibly creative and positive atmosphere that influenced and inspired me to write a children's book. The construction of a robot is a very complex undertaking, but with Roboy you get the desire to figure out how such a machine works. In addition to its educational focus, the story develops with themes such as prejudices and fear of the unknown in the background. Children particularly know the feeling of being marginalized because one has a larger nose, speaks a different language or has a strange name as I do. Finally Roboy is an incredibly cute creature that fascinates both adults and children and that’s why I wanted to bring him to live and give him a identity.

Roboy is a research platform that was built at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the University of Zurich during a nine-months period. The development has been directed by Prof. Dr. Rolf Pfeifer and Roboy was presented a year ago in March 2013. Since then, Roboy is on tour around the world, showing his skill and unique design at exhibitions and theatres. On the 9th of March 2014 he’s turning one year old and he is celebrating his birthday. As a reward for his hard work Roboy has a wish for his birthday: a children's book. Everyone who wants to read about Roboy's adventure, can support the project here.

Das Kinderbuch “Roboy - Ein Roboterjunge entdeckt die Welt“ ist für Kinder zwischen 5 und 7 Jahren und erzählt, wie der kleine Roboterjunge die Welt sieht und entdecken lernt.
Zusammenfassung
Es war einmal ein Professor, dessen Traum es war, einen menschenähnlichen Roboter zu bauen. Er sollte sich nicht nur bewegen wie ein Mensch und intelligent sein, er soll auch fühlen und denken können. Nach vielen Monaten und dem Einsatz etlicher Wissenschaftler ist es endlich soweit; dem kleinen Roboterjungen wird der Kopf aufgesetzt und er erblickt zum ersten Mal das Licht der Welt. „Seine Aufgabe soll es sein, den Menschen bei ihren alltäglichen Problemen zu helfen. Ein guter Freund sozusagen“, meint der Professor und nennt ihn Roboy. Im Labor für Künstliche Intelligenz lernt Roboy laufen, sprechen und auch seine Freunde Robodog und Robomoto kennen. Jede Bewegung die er macht, müssen die Ingenieure und Informatiker programmieren und ihm Schritt für Schritt beibringen. Damit er auch Wissen speichert und sich eines Tages mit Menschen austauschen kann, erzählt ihm der Professor von der grossen weiten Welt. Eines Tages, als die Sonne auch in die hintersten Ecken des Labors scheint, packt Roboy die Neugierde. „Was für ein schöner Tag“, denkt Roboy. „Ich möchte endlich mal an den Blumen schnuppern, Tieren begegnen und die fliegenden Maschinen am Flughafen sehen, von denen mir der Professor erzählt hat“. Auf leisen Sohlen schleicht er sich aus dem Gebäude.
Doch sind die Menschen ausserhalb des Labors auch freundlich zum kleinen Roboter? Und wie wird ihn der Professor wiederfinden?

Als ehemalige Pressesprecherin des Labors für Künstliche Intelligenz konnte ich die Entstehung von Roboy hautnah miterleben. Unzählige WissenschaftlerInnen, IngenieurInnen und KünstlerInnen aus der ganzen Welt arbeiteten Tag und Nacht und “tüftelten“ unaufhaltsam am Projekt Roboy, um den Roboter zum Leben zu erwecken. Menschen mit unterschiedlichsten Kulturen und Sprachen hatten allesamt nur ein Ziel und eine Vision. Dies hat eine unglaublich kreative und positive Atmosphäre erschaffen, die mich auch angesteckt und inspiriert hat, ein Kinderbuch zu schreiben. Der Bau eines Roboters ist ein sehr komplexes Unterfangen, doch mit ihm bekommt man Lust, herauszufinden, wie so eine Maschine funktioniert. Neben dem edukativen Charakter geht es in meiner Geschichte auch um Vorurteile und Ängste gegenüber dem Unbekannten. Vor allem Kinder kennen das Gefühl, wie es ist, ausgegrenzt zu werden, weil man eine grössere Nase hat, eine andere Sprache spricht oder so wie ich, einen merkwürdigen Namen hat. Und schliesslich ist Roboy ein unglaublich niedliches Wesen, das Erwachsene und Kinder gleichzeitig fasziniert und dem ich einen Charakter geben wollte.
Projekt Roboy und das Kinderbuch

Roboy ist eine Forschungsplattform, die am Labor für Künstliche Intelligenz an der Universität Zürich unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr. Pfeifer in 9 Monaten entwickelt und letztes Jahr im März 2013 der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt wurde. Seither ist Roboy auf Tour in der ganzen Welt und zeigt sein Können und seine Bauweise. Am 9. März 2014 wird er ein Jahr alt und feiert seinen Geburtstag. Als Lohn für seine Arbeit, die Ausstellungen und seine Performance rund um den Globus, hat sich Roboy auch etwas zu seinem Geburtstag gewünscht. Und zwar ein Kinderbuch. Wer mithelfen möchte und auch über Roboy’s Abenteuer lesen möchte, kann hier das Projekt unterstützen.
