Story
The Corky documentary will tell Corky’s story beginning with her capture at Pender Harbour in Canada in 1969, her early years in captivity at Marineland of the Pacific, and her current-day captivity at SeaWorld San Diego. Corky recently surpassed her 48-year anniversary of her capture. You will meet Dr. Paul Spong and Helena Symonds of OrcaLab who tell of their decades-long advocacy for Corky, the longest-held orca in captivity.
Footage will include the beautiful mile-and-a-half-long Corky Freedom Banner created by children from all over the world in the late 1990s. The Banner has thousands of messages of love for Corky and hopes for her return to her home waters in Canada where her Northern Resident Killer Whale family frequents and is studied by researchers and scientists. Interviews will include information about the unique culture, dialect, and social structure of the Northern Residents.
The documentary will also cover the shift in public perception about orcas in captivity and the current state of SeaWorld including the political, legal, and citizen actions that face SeaWorld. Researchers, scientists, lawyers, politicians, activists, musicians, ex-trainers, and children lend their voices for Corky and all captive orcas in this educational documentary.
You will learn about the several independent sea sanctuary projects that are currently being planned and developed for orcas, belugas, and dolphins, which leads to the exciting possibility that Corky and other cetaceans can be retired to sea sanctuaries to live out the remainder of their lives in a more natural habitat under human care.
The Corky documentary will be a feature film that we will enter in film festivals. Maybe one day our film will be on Netflix streaming and listed in the category "Top Picks for You" and you can say, yeah...you got that right!
