The digital speedometer for Audi B8 platform vehicles 

Eligible vehicles: 

2009 ~ 2016 8R Q5, SQ5 (up to 2017), 

2008 ~ 2016 8T: A5, S5, RS5, 8K: A4, S4, RS4

The digital speedometer dash product will feature: 

- 3.4" Dual 800 x 800 digital gauge displays with functional displays

- 4 x 1080p AHD Video input channels for front, left, right & rear view camera feeds (if vehicle equipped with, user supplied separately) 

- 1 x HDMI input (720p)

- Linux/QT/Java application execution: Speedometer, advanced real time vehicle diagnostic information display will be implemented. It will be possible to integrate  *Apple CarPlay or *Android Auto or any other compatible automotive application.(Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration will be subject to further approvals by Apple/Android and may not be possible at initial launch. This is yet to be determined)

- WIFI/BT preparation for apps 

- 1 - USB port for firmware upgrades

- 1 - switch for firmware upgrade functionality

- Automatic video switching on when left or right turn signal indicator has been activated, or reverse gear has been selected.

- compatible with factory Audi steering wheel buttons

- Customizable Advanced Diagnostic Information display: Animated Speedometer Speed (mph or km/h), Tachometer (RPM), MAF sensor reading, Boost reading, Voltage information, G-Force indicator and so on. 

- Drop in replacement: Purchasers will be required to open their factory Audi instrument cluster, remove the instrument cluster mainboard, inserts the purchased digital speedometer assembly, re-assemble their Audi instrument with the new digital speedometer cluster assembly using their original Audi factory housing. 

- Fail-Safe: The digital speedometer system is isolated from the original Audi speedometer. The factory centre informational display screen for the trip computer, digital speedometer and MMI information remains as it was provided by the factory. The factory Audi immobilizer will be maintained and will be unaffected by this change. The factory LED warning indicators such as "low tire pressure", "engine check light", "Air Bag warning" etc will be relocated but will retrain the original OEM functionality.

- Fully updatable firmware: RSNAV will provide firmware updates and functional upgrades to the software. RSNAV will work to implement the most wanted features from its customer base based on consumer feedback and feasibility to implement within the limit of the hardware support. 

 

Why don't you make full LCD speedometer replacement?

Simply, it's because of the LCD screen in the middle of the original mainboard.  The original speedometer is a key component for the vehicle security and is a part of immobilizer. It means without the original mainboard, your car won't start.  Thus it is essential to keep the original mainboard working in any circumstance. Without the centre screen, the mainboard would not work normally. It is physically not possible to place  a LCD panel above the existing LCD screen. 

A Speedometer is more than just moving needles to tell you what speed you are at now. This is primary vehicle electronic that cannot be modified, altered or copied easily.  We don't want to promise anything that is barely possible for anyone to make without huge support from Audi. 

The current concept design is the best available in terms of technical possibility and cost while keep your car drivable.

If you donate money less than 650$ USD, then it is treated as donation. We did not decide what we would offer for 'donations' but we would give you discounts respect to your donation amount. By donating, you are also a backer of this project.  

If you get a perk which is priced at $650 USD, then when this project completes around this fall, we will ship you a digital instrument cluster kit. Practically you are reserving your digital instrument cluster now. 

This fundraising is 'all or nothing'. If we do get the goal amount, then we will proceed and complete this project and produce the outcome. If we do not reach the goal amount within the campaign period, then this project will be permanently discarded.

Actual platform testing

The system will be running an embedded version of linux with QT UI for real time response - 'zero delay'.  The projected boot up time for the speedometer and RPM gauge is under 5 seconds. 

**The platform is capable of running Apple CarPlay. However, this feature is subject to approval from respective licensors and to include the feature would require additional licensing costs. Currently, it will not be a feature of the project unless there is a strong demand and also a successful approval from Apple licensor(s).**

Administrative Details

Prospective Timeline

The actual hardware designs will take 120~200 days. (May 2021 to Sept. 2021)

The Plastic mold design and production will take 100 days. (starting in June 2021)

 

Current project status

Currently, conceptual design study, system function analysis, and material cost evaluation have been completed. 

 

Cost Analysis

The Hardware and UI development will cost about $60K CAD 

The Plastic mouldings for 5 different Audi instrument clusters will cost about $70K CAD.
