Dthulhu: The Vinyl Sculpture
Dthulhu the vinyl sculpture
Dthulhu will be medical and food grade, PVC, Phthalate, and BPA free recycled vinyl. Just like a regular rubber duck, (many quality rubber ducks are vinyl) Dthulhu can play in the tub and will also squeak when squeezed! What could be more fun than your very own Old One in the tub!

Dthulhu started as a concept painting and was then sculpted digitally in a computer
Dthulhu Packaging
Dthulhu will come in a full color box which will have the theme of the poster as well as a window so you can see The Old One sleeping behind the great doors in front of the palace in R'lyeh.

Dthulhu's madness packaging
Across the front of the box is the chant of the cult members and on the right hand side is the translation:
"Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Dthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn"
"In his house at R'lyeh dead Dthulhu waits dreaming
On the opposite side is an original poem dedicated to Dthulhu and written by my wife Sasha Prince,
From the deep crawl eyes that creep with green and hidden terror.
They beckon those who crave its throes of sadness and despair.
They spread their slime and turn to grime the believers who in error
lose their hope and for proof grope after a deathly prayer.
The Dthulhu Limited Edition Poster (No longer available)
NOTE: As a bonus I will sign all of the art posters!
In addition to the sculpture there is a limited edition poster to accompany Dthulhu in its new home. I am a huge fan of poster artists and when I first arrived in Austin the poster art scene blew my mind. I discovered incredible illustrators and artists in Texas who worked in the poster and rock world and who made incredible art. This poster is a homage to them. Also, aside from comics, the poster classics of the 60's and 70's have influenced my art, so to invoke the spirit of these times, I listened to lots of 70’s music (lots of Sabbath) while designing the poster.

The Dthulhu Limited Edition Poster
The Limited Edition Poster is based on the original concept for the duck which I made the morning after I had the dream. It is always hard to remember exactly what we see in dreams and what we see doesn’t always mean it will translate to design. As any artist would, I tried to bridge the gap and the result was my first concept.

Original concept painting
I also wanted to make sure it paid homage to the original story. As an Illustrator I have always thought about how to visually handle the non-Euclidean geometry of R'lyeh. It was fun to illustrate the city and its giant doors. If you look closely at the bottom you will see the Norwegian sailor, Gustaf Johansen.
The poster is 18x24 inches and will be printed on high quality 100 lbs gloss paper suitable for framing.
Dthulhu Paper sculpture (No longer available)
Yes it’s true! You can download and build your very own paper-craft Dthulhu, (non-Euclidean geometry not included.) Children will love to build the Lord of Madness! Use Dthulhu to spice up the office, a party; anyplace becomes insanely fun once the Great Old One is present. Transform any occasion into madness!

Dthulhu Downloadable Poster & Desktop Image (No longer available)
The Dthulhu downloadable poster and desktop screen saver is a 3D rendered image of Dthulhu in an underwater bathroom in R’lyeh. It is the image of Dthulhu I created in 3D and will look great on the wall. Print it and hang it in your favorite bathroom or splash it on your desktop displaying your madness for The Old One.

Dthulhu Development
The development for Dthulhu started with the concept art and the main design work was done in 3D. Since the product is an exact print of the 3D model I wanted to get the size and scale exactly right. I made multiple prototypes with a printing software that allows the building of them in paper (as seen in the video and below).

Computer and paper prototypes
This was the impetus for the downloadable paper duck. I am very happy with the final dimensions that I have chosen for Dthulhu.
Risks and challenges
The challenge for this project, besides completing it, was to keep it simple. With the help of a good friend in the toy industry and others who have contributed their opinions, I believe I have accomplished this goal. I also enlisted the help of my wife who will be helping me manage fulfillment. The real risk is, of course, that it won’t succeed. But when I look at this project I am amazed because I now live in an age when I can create something and bring into existence and directly reach a potential market. Just ten years ago this would not have been possible and I am grateful that Indiegogo has given me this opportunity.
I have art directed numerous video game projects as well as worked as a creative director and a project director. Additionally, I have run my own digital freelance studio creating corporate identities, rock posters, media promos and more. Before my entry into the video game industry I ran my own screen printing company in Austin, Texas, creating original clothing as well as custom apparel for clients. This is an exciting new venture for me.
FAQ:
Will Dthulhu make a noise?
Yes! When squeezed Dthulhu will utter the “sound of a thousand souls that are squeezed together.” (Thank you, Gerard van den Akker!) Actually, Dthulhu will squeak when squeezed.
Why are Dthulhu’s eyes flat on the bottom?
In the original dream I distinctly remembered the eyes and their shape. I wanted them to remain true to the inspiration.
Will Dthulhu be like a rubber duck? Can I take it in the tub?
Yes! Many rubber ducks are vinyl. Dthulhu will a high quality rubber duck.
How different will the color be between the glow in the dark and the regular Dthulhu?
The glow in the dark, by nature of its glow properties, will be much lighter, so the glow-in-the dark Dthulhu will be very, very light, as opposed to the deeper green of the non-glow Dthulhu. Whitish green, like most any Glow in the Dark object.
Why did the perks change?
Once we placed the initial order for the duck there were a finite amount. The perks reflect what is now available.
Why are Dthulhu's tentacles round and erect, why don't they droop down?
Dthulhu's tentacles form the basic shape of a ducks bill. During the design Phase I tried some droopy tapered tentacles but they greatly subtracted from Dthulhu's duck shape. Dthulhu's novelty is in being a rubber duck and with doopy/tapered tentacles much of that character along with the "cute factor" was lost.
But not to worry Dthulhu is young. They will droop down with time ...Aeons.
Will Dthulhu haunt my dreams and drive me to madness?
"Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Dthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn"
