A Little About FIRE IN BALANCE

Fire has been an intrinsic part of the human experience since the dawn of man. Control of fire is what separated us from the animals. Fire in Balance takes that control and literally turns it upside down. We are creating an immersive experience for all to witness and interact with the unique phenomenon of inverted fire.

Expanding on the success of our similar
honorarium piece Holding Flame, Fire in Balance is an installation made up of
an inverted firebox suspended within a pagoda-like steel structural frame, surrounded by a series of fire dishes and fire towers. The
entire structure will be clad in a laser cut steel façade creating a
mysterious and engaging aesthetic with a comfortable, unique,
environment inside for people to gather and experience the extraordinary
beauty of inverted fire.
This piece is massive! Standing 17' tall x 28' wide x 60' long, Fire In Balance will comfortably hold 70 people under it's warm, inviting glow.

Something of this size is not created by one
person and requires the continued encouragement and support from the
larger community. Donations of time, resources, and supplies aid the
community in reaching basic goals quickly.
Fortunately our local community
has provided an immensely diverse network of people with a wide array of helpful
skills, from metal fabricators and architects, to digital experts and a handful
of awesome people just excited to get to their hands dirty and help however
they can, we’ve been fortunate to find a great group of people who take joy
from contributing to bring this gift to the playa. If you’re in the Los Angeles area, we’d love
for you to stop by and help, but if you can’t, a fiscal donation would be
equally awesome!

Our
construction materials are well north of $25,000. The steel is our largest expense. In addition to the cost of the raw materials, the
intricate laser cut façade costs several thousands of dollars to etch into the
steel. Coming in at a distant second is
the fire! To keep Fire in Balance burning every night throughout the burn will require
over 1,000 gallons of propane. Then, there is all of that other stuff, such
as the hammocks, paying for the truck to get it out to the playa, gas, hosing,
valves, etc.
Needless to say we have a lot that needs to get paid for!

Every dollar that you donate helps
make this project a reality! We’ve already independently secured $15,000 in funding,
but we need at least $25,000 more to bring Fire in Balance to the playa.
Raising this money is one of
the first steps that needs to be completed so that our team can focus on the
remaining challenges this project presents. Your Fire in Balance team of over
30 artists, engineers, designers, volunteers and dreamers are all committed and
eager to put in the work to bring this piece to life but we need YOUR help
