"Hillywood" to Hollywood... Chasing my dream.

Mijn naam is Frank Maters, ik ben 22 jaar en woon in Hilversum. Het is mijn grote droom om een professioneel film regisseur te worden en ben erg blij dat ik ben toegelaten tot de New York Film Academy voor de studie 'Bachelor of Fine Arts in Filmmaking'. Ik heb de wil, de creativiteit en de kracht om dit te bereiken. Er mist alleen nog een groot onderdeel.. geld.

Hoe werkt het?

Om de crowdfunding campagne te laten slagen en het zo duidelijk mogelijk te maken heb ik de volgende constructie bedacht. Bedrijven kunnen mij helpen door te doneren met een minimum van 2.500 euro. In ruil hiervoor krijgt u een promotionele bedrijfsvideo gemaakt door mij (Frank). Dit houdt in dat ik een dag langs kom om te filmen en interviews af te nemen en twee montage revisies. Mocht u geïnteresseerd zijn om meer te krijgen (meer opnamedagen, meer montage revisies of een grotere productie waarde) dan is dat altijd mogelijk, ik maak graag een offerte op maat gericht op specifieke wensen. Er zijn drie verschillende levels waarbij de eerste het algemene Indiegogo doel is. Als dit doel wordt gehaald zal het geld worden opgehaald en aan mij worden uitbetaald. Het uiteindelijke doel is om het laatste level te bereiken, wat level 3 is, zodat ik drie jaar kan studeren en mijn Bachelor of Fine Arts in Filmmaking kan gaan halen aan de NYFA in Los Angeles.

How does it work?
For the crowdfunding to be successful and perfectly clear I came up with the following construction. Companies can help me by pledging a minimum of 2.500 euros. In exchange I will personally visit your business (for one day) and make a promotional video plus two edit revisions. If you would like more (days, revisions or bigger production value) it is possible to receive a customized proposition. There are three tiers where the first one will be the Indiegogo goal. If this goal is met the money will be collected from you (one of the investors) and transferred to me. The main goal is to reach the final tier, which is tier 3 for the three year long study BFA in Filmmaking at the NYFA in Los Angeles.

Een uit de hand gelopen aanmeldingsfilm

Mijn eerste korte film genaamd Limbo de film (Limbo the movie) begon als een aanmeldingsfilm voor de Nederlandse filmacademie maar evolueerde in een serieuze gooi naar een korte film door gevestigde namen te casten in de Nederlandse film wereld zoals Manuel Broekman en Kees Boot. Ik heb het gehele budget ook gecrowdfund en contacteerde sponsoren voor de hardware en post-productie zoals Avi-Drome (post-productie bedrijf welke producties maakt zoals The Voice en verschillende Nederlandse speelfilms zoals Simon) en TEAM ENG (facilitair bedrijf welke high-end opname hardware uitleent).

An admission film gone crazy
My first short film called Limbo the Movie (Limbo de film) started as an appliance film for the Dutch film academy (Nederlandse Filmacademie) but evolved in a serious short film attempt by casting established names in the dutch film industry for cast and crew like Manuel Broekman and Kees Boot. I crowdfunded the total budget of the movie and contacted sponsors for hardware and post-production facilities like Avi-Drome (post-production company delivering audiovisual productions like The Voice and several dutch features) and TEAM ENG (company delivering high-end video materials for shooting). 

Toen ik door de Nederlandse filmacademie werd afgewezen stopte mij dit niet om door te gaan met de productie van dit korte film project. Nu staat mijn eigen geschreven, geregisseerde en gemonteerde film online op www.limbodefilm.nl.

De New York Film Academy

In de tijd dat ik Limbo produceerde kreeg ik een e-mail van de NYFA over de mogelijkheid om in Utrecht langs te komen voor acteer opleiding audities. Ik beantwoorde de e-mail met de vraag of het ook mogelijk was om langs te komen voor een kennismakingsgesprek voor de BFA in Filmmaking studie. Dit was mogelijk en ik werd uitgenodigd om langs te komen. Toen ik daar was presenteerde ik voor twee mensen van de school mijn crowdfund video voor Limbo, het script en vertelde over mijzelf. Ongeveer twee weken later ontving ik de mail met het volgende bericht wat misschien wel eens mijn leven zou kunnen veranderen:

"Congratulations on your acceptance to the New York Film Academy! I am pleased to inform you that you have been awarded a Talent Based Scholarship."

During the time I was working on Limbo, I received an e-mail from the NYFA presenting their audition opportunity in Utrecht for acting classes. I answered the e-mail with the question if it was possible to come for my audition. Not for acting, but for the study Bachelor of Fine Arts in Filmmaking. I was invited. Once I was there I presented my crowdfunding video for Limbo, it's script and story and spoke about myself. About two weeks later I received the email that would be the start of changing my life: 

"Congratulations on your acceptance to the New York Film Academy! I am pleased to inform you that you have been awarded a Talent Based Scholarship."

De kosten

Geaccepteerd worden is zeker een ding. Echter kosten de vlucht er naar toe en terug (moet helaas ooit een keer), daar leven bij een gastfamilie, eten en drinken, verzekeringen, telefoon kosten en de studie zelf allemaal zo veel geld dat ik nooit alleen ervoor op zou kunnen draaien.

De totale kosten van de opleiding na aftrek van de studiebeurs en de financiële steun die ik van de school zelf krijg bedragen 147.931,56 euro. Dat is berekend door de volgende posten bij elkaar op te tellen:

Being accepted is surely one thing. The flight to and (at one time) from, living there at a guest parents home, food and drinks, insurance, telephone costs and the study itself all cost money and so much that I would never be able to pay for it.

Risico's en uitdagingen

Welke grote obstakels of sprongen over grote ravijnen ik ook moet trotseren, ik zal mijn droom najagen om een film regisseur te worden.

Toen ik mijn korte film 'Limbo de film' maakte kwam ik ook verschillende tegenslagen tegen die ik ook heb weten te trotseren. Ik geloof dat dit bewijst dat ik capabel ben om dit soort klappen op te vangen en door te kunnen zetten.

Uw toegezegde donatie zal worden teruggestort wanneer het doel van 50.000 euro niet wordt gehaald. U betaald alleen als ik ook naar Amerika kan gaan!

Risks and Challenges
No matter what bumps and leaps over big ravines I have to go over, I will always chase my dream to become a movie director.

By making my short film 'Limbo the Movie' I experienced such setbacks and kept on going which I believe proves I have the endurance of completing this journey.

Your pledge will be refunded if the goal of 50.000 Euros is not met. You are not paying if I'm not going!
