Short Summary
KDIF is a different kind of radio. We are a coalition
of community members that are building a radio station with the vision of engaging
a new tool for social justice, as well as opening up our current media
landscape to new and unheard voices. Through the landmark Local Community Radio Act of 2011, we
were granted a space on the dial - 102.9FM – transmitting in Central and South
Phoenix, AZ.
Over 90% of media in the US is
owned by six major corporations, so it has a national and commercial
perspective. The focus on locally produced content and public media has been
lost. We may hear news stories about Joe Arpaio or our education budget cuts,
but not about our grassroots organizers, our vibrant cultural scene, our neighborhoods,
our families. These are the stories – these are the people – who should be on
air, but are not.
KDIF is making a difference. Mass media has lost sight of
the power of radio, but we haven’t. Radio has always been the most accessible
media. It has a long history around the world of being used as a tool for resistance,
organizing, and social justice. We are building on this history, using radio as
a tool for change in and from Phoenix.
This media platform is a tool in
the hands of our members. They are not just listeners, they are the
programmers, directors, engineers, producers of the station. We have expert
mentors ready to share the how-tos of radio to make this happen.
Why here? Media has
told us that Phoenix is not an easy place to live for many people. But it is
exactly that climate that has built our resilience. KDIF will enable the people
of Phoenix to share their powerful stories, music, knowledge, and culture. They
will challenge and inspire one another to make the difference.
What We Need & What You Get
All contributions are tax deductible
through our fiscal agent, the Arizona Interfaith Alliance for Worker Justice.
While we are already building
relationships with our members in Central and South Phoenix, developing our
training curriculum, and connecting with producers to air content online, we
cannot transmit or train without space and equipment.
The start-up budget includes these capital
costs, as well as operational costs for the first year. This is our capital
campaign, meaning everything you donate will go to literally building our station. We will match this
with grants to cover our operational costs. If you are more interested in
supporting operations, please contact us at 102.9phx@gmail.com.

The Impact
If you have
read this far, we assume you share our values and vision, that people-powered radio
has the potential to significantly challenge and inspire us, and present the
stories that matter. Know that with your help, KDIF has the capacity to make
this happen.
With our
limited resources, as purely a volunteer project, here’s some of what we’ve
accomplished so far.
-
Hosted
a launch party to build membership
- Collaborated
on a successful fundraising concert
- Held
a “Why 102.9FM?” forum to ensure our work reflects the values and desires of
our members
- Formed
a board of directors who meet bi-weekly, as well as established a four core
committee structure of volunteers: engagement, finance, production, and
compliance
- Built
a website with an embedded playlist of locally produced content
- Continue
to support, promote, and partner with various community organizations within
our transmission area
Your contributions
and support is formally launching KDIF. Our members in Central and South
Phoenix already have the music, stories, knowledge, and culture that should be
on air. Our 20+ volunteers with radio experience have the skills necessary to
produce, train, and transmit that content. Your support will give us the tools
to unite the two and make a difference here in Phoenix.
Beyond that,
you are changing media as we know it, introducing a new opportunity for radio
to regain its roots in locally produced, public content. Through syndication
and our web presence, people all over the world can access and learn from the
resilient and vibrant culture of Phoenix.
Risks & Challenges
Urgency: When granted the radio license, the FCC gave us
until October 2015 to have a radio transmission up and running, or we would
lose our license. In August 2015 we will have the opportunity to file for an extension on our construction permit. We will take this opportunity as a safety net, but we
stand firm by our goal to begin transmission in October 2015.
Studio Space: While we have already secured our transmission
space, we have not secured the lease for our office and studio space. We are
currently in negotiation with the Zion
Institute to host a studio in their compound. Not only are they located in
and serve our transmission area, but they are also a dedicated partner of the
radio station.
Engagement and Representation within our transmission area:
To ensure equitable representation in decision-making, we set a goal in our
bylaws stating that at least 50% of people involved in the station live or work
in South Phoenix. We have not met this goal as of yet, but we are quickly
working toward it. We have strong relationships with organizations in South
Phoenix and continue to expand and deepen those ties. As we work to get
ourselves on air, we can also connect with people in our broadcast area beyond
our existing ties.
Fiscal sustainability: There is a risk that we will not raise
enough funds for operations, but we have both the benefit of dedicated members
and a plan to continue generating funds through a variety of sources. Our
strongest assets include the pro-bono expertise we have within our organizers
and members. This includes grant writers, lawyers, engineers, fundraisers, and
audio producers. We are applying for local and national grants for capacity
building focused on arts, technology, and social justice. Our long-term plan
for fiscal sustainability includes membership-based contributions, event production,
grants, and eventually underwriting.
Other Ways You Can Help
We recognize that not everyone can
donate monetarily. While it is necessary to the success of this radio station,
KDIF is so much more. As a people-powered radio station, we recognize all the
skills, knowledge, and assets people carry, and appreciate anything you are
willing to share.
