The Pitch

Gold Ninja Video was a passion project I started because I love introducing people to great movies - especially if they're obscure gems that have fallen through the cracks.
My original intent was to release public domain films on Blu-ray, ones that are treated like crap and that you could easily find floating around in a hundred different places on the internet, with the respect they had never before received. I created lavish deluxe editions that featured commentaries, video essays, and bonus films that would provide context and a deeper appreciation of productions that most of the world had dismissed.
I was delighted to discover that people liked the stuff I put together! Thanks to a growing group of fans, I have been able to release a new disc every month for the last two years, and best of all, put out special editions of new and unreleased movies with the participation of the filmmakers through THE DIRECTOR’S CULT.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to afford to do new scans of film prints when it came to the older titles, so I had to present them in the best public domain standard-definition transfers I could find. I made the case that the discs weren’t about the movie (which you could often watch on Youtube), but the special features.
Until now.

I’ve started this Indiegogo to raise funds to pay for new scans of 16mm and 35mm film prints. The average cost of a new 2K scan is $4,000 - $6,000 - so the money raised here will allow me to scan three films I have ready to go - one indie film, one Canada Cult Classic and one Taiwanese Action Film. It will also allow me to verify the viability of this venture - and if there’s interest - I have an extensive list of films I’d love to tackle and release into the world!
But I can’t do it without your help.

The First Wave of Films:

FREAKY FARLEY (2007): This classic Charlie Roxburgh and Matt Farley horror-comedy has only ever existed in standard definition, but it was shot on beautiful 16mm, and it deserves to be seen in all of its moody glory! Gold Ninja Video will do a new 2K scan of all the original 16mm harmful elements.

SKIP TRACER (1977): A classic slice of Canadian Cinema history, half REPO MAN, half TAXI DRIVER, that has never been available beyond a dreary-looking VHS version. Gold Ninja Video will put out a 2K scan of a 35mm print.

***SECRET 1980s TAIWANESE ACTION FILM***: Get ready for full-on brain melt. It’s a cult classic in psychotronic film-loving circles that has never been released on DVD or VHS - and has only ever been available in very fuzzy versions. Gold Ninja Video will do a new 2K scan in a 35mm print and present it subtitled and in its original aspect ratio for the first time!

Risks & Challenges
I've been running Gold Ninja Discs for two years now, and while I've been blown away by the support I've received, I would love to move to the 'next level' - which first and foremost would involve doing new films scans. Being able to say that we're releasing the only HD version of a lost cult film would raise Gold Ninja Video to another level as a Boutique Film Distributor and would open the doors to hundreds of new and exciting opportunities.
Other Ways You Can Help
You can also help by spreading the word to movie lovers, physical media obsessives, or wealthy acquaintances who would love to help out a growing little business fuelled by passion.
