{The Story}

Hello, my name is Maria Gomez. I'm the author of Gramita's Tortillas. This story is near and dear to my heart because not only is Gramita based on my own grandmother, but the story also demonstrates the love of a Gramita.

I grew up in Santa Rosa, NM where I enjoyed the simple pleasures of small town life - family, community, and the outdoors. After graduating from Santa Rosa High School, I moved to Albuquerque and received my bachelor’s degree from The University of New Mexico.

I majored in Journalism and Mass Communication with a concentration in Multimedia Journalism. Wanting to explore more creative writing lead me to publish my first short story with the guidance of Plot Duckies.

For this project, I'm fortunate enough to be working with Plot Duckies, to make my story come to life as an illustrated children's book. Also, Alexa Verardo will be our illustrator for this project. With this project, I'm asking for your support to help offset the cost of our illustrator and cost of color printing and I have plenty of cool incentives in return for your donations.

Once the campaign is complete, all rewards will ship by December 2020. Shipping times may vary due to COVID-19, but we're focused on having everything ready for you for the perfect Christmas gift.

{About Alexa Verardo, the Artist}

Alexa Verardo is a freelance graphic designer and illustrator in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Before she made the jump into freelancing, she worked as a chalkboard artist and graphic designer for Whole Foods Market for more than 14 years. She specializes in unique, thoughtful, eye-catching, and playful design and illustration.

Here are some examples of Alexa's work! And, she did the beautiful cover for the book.

{What We Need & What You Get}

With $2,500 we can pay our illustrator for her hard work (she's already done a beautiful job on the cover!), and get the books printed and shipped.

The rewards Include the Following:

· A 68 page soft bound or hard cover edition in both English and Spanish, perfect for ages 6-10.

· A downloadable e-book version of the book.

· An option to have your name or your child's name printed at the front of the book.

· A fun sticker.

These books will be ready in December, so they'll be perfect for gift giving!

And, if you're in Albuquerque we'll have a special event at El Vado where I will hand out books and Plot Duckies will have free coffee and hot chocolate on hand. Date TBD.

We've raised $3,300 thanks to you! That means Plot Duckies will include all the extra perks! Two coloring sheets (black and white images from the book), a fun die cut sticker, and a complete coloring book version in with all physical book orders!

And! We're leaving the campaign open to inDemand. Any orders made after Nov 16 will be shipped in late December or early January.

{Plot Duckies}

Sonja Dewing is an award-winning creative writer, published author, and CEO of Plot Duckies. She started the company because she saw the need to help women publish their stories with strong female characters and also help women of color reach their publishing goals for their amazing stories.

The Impact

We are publishing this book in both Spanish and English, which creates a bigger impact than English alone. This book will connect with Moms and Dads of both languages and help us connect all our children to language and reading.

The University of Arizona also says that a "benefit of bilingual books is that they can be shared in families where the parents may speak only one language while the child is learning English as a second language. Children who speak only English can learn about different languages and can pick up words in other languages by reading bilingual books."

This story is also important too as a heart warming connection with family.

Risks & Challenges

There are a few risks, but I know that as a team (myself, Alexa, Sonja, and Casey) we can overcome these risks and get you a beautifully finished book.

Plot Duckies has fronted the first payment to Alexa so she can get to work and they've published many times before, so I know this book will happen.
