When your B-school besties pull up as you sneak out of the house at 3am, you pull up the collar of your camo jacket and get in the van. The boogie beat and headbanging riff of “Eazy” blast out of the speakers; in come Terry Riley keys and a thudding kick on the One, resolving to power chords. Your creep friend skips a few tracks back and whispers, “This one is my jam; it's like the Commodores' 'Night Shift' -- it makes me emotional."
By the time the night is over, you've listened to Heavy Breathing's “Airtight”, start to finish, more than once: Erick's guitars galloping, Jeff's drums thumping four all over the floor, and Amanda's keys playing Jon-Lord-alongside-Bernie-Worrell. As the words of the Rhythm Machine echo and ring in your ears -- commands to “Deny!” juxtaposed with invitations to “Dance, dance!" -- you stumble back up your lawn and are greeted at the front door by your mom, demanding to know what you were doing out until 7am. You fall into bed, knowing that, now, every night you face the choice: Boogie down with this band; or reject convention, authority, and dogma, and get down and boogie with this band. Heavy Breathing is from Washington, D.C.; as 3/4 of The Apes, they put out seven records with three different vocalists across 10 years and 500 concerts worldwide. As Heavy Breathing, they've solved the eternal "human singer" problem by using sounds from the World Wide Web, keeping the core of Erick on bass and gits, Amanda playing synths and organs, and Jeff bashing the drums at centerstage.
