Dear friends, family and colleagues,
We are reaching out to you to ask for your support after the devastating
earthquake in Gorkha District, Nepal which is about 100 kilometres north-west
of Kathmandu, is the epicenter of the earthquake that has killed over 10,000
people. That is where the real devastation begins in the traditional villages
that are in the surrounding hills. We, Rajesh Gurung (currently in Kathmandu,
Nepal) and Suresh Dhakal (currently in Bangkok, Thailand) are coordinating
international fundraising efforts to support and sustain the work of local NGOs
and first responders on the ground. The goal is an achievable $20,000 that will
help to provide food, medicines, mattress, and shelter to the villagers of
Gorkha District. The Government of Nepal is still unknown about problem in that
place, every people in villages are now homeless, no food to eat and do not
have a shelter.
We are setting up a Help Gorkha fund for immediate urgencies for the
villagers affected by the earthquake in rural villages of Gorkha district. We
will update on an ongoing basis as details emerge.
Summary
When the deadly 7.9-magnitude
earthquake hit Nepal on 25th April 2015, it destroyed many parts of Gorkha
district including Barkpak, Laprak, Saurpani and Siranchowk. This is the area where the villages are totally
cut off and where the death toll will increase exponentially once they finally
get there and realise how bad things are.
One of those villages is Barpak, a
tiny, vibrant settlement of about 1,200 homes in Gorkha district, site of the
quake's epicenter. Even by Nepal's remote standards, getting to Barpak is not
easy.
One of the villagers pointed to the
people gathered there and identified them, one by one: “Father just buried;
mother just buried; sister just buried.”
Back in Saurpani, an ethnic Gorkha
village at the epicenter of Saturday’s quake, Ms. Dhakal said, “we have no
shelter, no food and all the bodies are scattered around.”
