Update - New Stretch Goal: $1350

Hello everyone!

Thanks to a bunch of great donations, we reached our new goal of $1150! Since we still have about week left in the campaign, let's see how much we can raise before the campaign ends.  We have a new stretch goal of $1350.  The extra money we raise will go to next year's funds to bring our interpreters back for DEFCON 22 (assuming it's not canceled ;] ).  Keep spreading the word and donating!

What is DEAF CON?

Our goals are to encourage many Deaf/Hard of Hearing (HoH) hackers to attend DEFCON, help provide those hackers with partial or full services, and provide a place for Deaf/HoH hackers to meetup and hangout.

First discussions of reaching out to the Deaf/HH community for DEFCON 21 started on January 6th, 2013 in a thread on DEFCON forums. Since then, the discussions have focused on identifying services, strategies, and volunteers to make this a success.

What is Needed?

Great things are already happening at DEFCON.  Dark Tangent and DEFCON staff are already sponsoring live speech-to-text CART services for all the main speaking tracks at the con.

We would also like to provide  independent American Sign Language interpreters to float around the conference and provide live translation to those participants who request it. This is seperate from the sponsored CART services.

There are a couple individuals who have graciously volunteered their services for this year’s con. They are freelance interpreters willing to donate their time to provide translation services to DEAF and HH participants.  However, we need to provide for travel and lodging expenses to bring them out to Las Vegas.  That is where you come in.

How Can I Help?

Donate to our campaign and get one of these fine rewards at each level. Also, spread the word about our campaign!  Like and share on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.

Whatever you can contribute is fine. You have our sincere and humble thanks!
