WHY?
I Love You Mami screenplay is based on the coming-of-age experience of Andrés Estévez, one that is common for most young adults in Puerto Rico. This is a culture that prioritizes family and togetherness so much so that many teens go on to live most of their young adult life living in their parents home.
As with any family, the dynamic can be challenged by personalities, desires and uncontrollable circumstances. In Puerto Rico, natural disasters such as hurricanes are common and families are constantly at risk. This dynamic puts pressure on those responsible for the families well being, whether it be the parents, grandparents or even the young people themselves. While many hurricanes have passed through Puerto Rico, the aftermath is not easy to deal with. There are many families still living in Puerto Rico to this day because they have to and must raise their families in these conditions. What we don't know is how easy it is to make the best of it.
We hope to use this story to provide understanding of the circumstances Puerto Rican families are still dealing with to all people and how a young man finds himself coming to understand the way in which his mother makes the most of their situation.
