JXTA Abroad
As a part of preparing young people to work in the field of Contemporary Art, this summer Juxtaposition Arts is sending two young apprentices, Ysabella Johnson and Samie Johnson (no relation), to study abroad in Europe. Ysabella Johnson is a student at the University of Minnesota studying Fine Arts and Samie Johnson is a student at Minneapolis Community and Technical College studying Community Development. They both work part time as assistant muraliats and show their work across the twin cities. This trip abroad coincides with two important arts events in Europe, Documenta 14 and the Venice Biennale. Ysa and Samie have shown themselves to be consistent and thoughtful emerging artists and the opportunity to see and experience contemporary art at these globally important venues is sure to inspire some amazing things from them both.
These events occur simultaneously only once a decade, so this summer offers Ysa and Samie a unique opportunity to see a large range of art produced by some of this century's most significant artists from across the world. It also provides them an opportunity to meet other working artists and reflect on the work that they themselves are making in relationship to an international community of cultural producers. They will be traveling to Kassel, Munich, and Bavaria in Germany and Balzano and Venice in Italy. Your contribution will support this unique learning opportunity by off setting costs of travel within Europe, lodging, and per diem's.
The cost to send one apprentice is $3279. We have successfully raised enough to cover flights but would like to raise an additional $3,000 to cover lodging, passport fees, Eurorail passes, meals and materials. Your generous support will help get us there! We appreciate the generous community of supporters who have gotten us to this point and will value a donation of any value from $1 to $3000.
For our larger financial donors, there are creative perks!!! For a contribution of $50, Ysa and Samie will send a digital artwork made in each of the five cities they travel to. For a contribution of $100 they will mail you two handmade postcards during their travel; and for a contribution of $150+ they will send you a portfolio of 10 limited edition prints they they will complete over the course of their trip.
All of our supporters will be able to keep up with what Ysa and Samie are up to via their travel blog which will go live the week of June 13. And, if you can't contribute financially, you can contribute by sharing this campaign with others through social media or email.
Thank you for your generosity!
