Our Story
September 12th, 13th and 14th, at the Society Hill Playhouse, Kathy's Daughter will make its debut in the Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Kathy's Daughter, a stage play loosely based on the lives of Catherine Patterson and Katrina Deaton, also known as K.J., delves into the life of character Christina Leeds. Unable to deal with the baggage of her past, Christina wittingly shares her experiences with the audience as she inches closer to her final decision to take her life.
Creating awareness through art, writer, director, producer, Katrina Deaton, will use Kathy's Daughter as a platform to launch a non-profit in her mother's name called, "Cathy's Daughters." With a redemptive theme, the non-profit will implement programs transforming victims into activists with a heavy focus on domestic violence, physical and sexual abuse, and depression.
The Impact
Katrina Deaton and her mother Catherine Patterson, who passed away in 97', were both victims of domestic violence and suicide survivors. Katrina's attachment to the production and its purpose, pushed her to partner with organizations in the Phialdelphia area who work directly with populations affected by domestic violence and suicide. Each night of the production, an organization will be highlighted. They will be able to answer questions and offer resources before and after the play. They will also receive a donation from ticket sales that night.
Women in Transition, an organization that offers counseling and advocacy for women endangered by domestic abuse, have already partnered with the production and will be featured Monday night, September 12th. The American Suicide Prevention Association has also expressed interest in partnering with the production. Closing night will focus on Cathy's Daughters the non-profit. "Everything happens for a reason. To be a victim is not enough, when you can be empowered to use the pain and awareness you receive from a horrible experience to heal or save another."
What We Need & What You Get
The Philadelphia Fringe Festival allows artists to produce their own work while using their esteemed reputation. In addition to Fringe Festival fees, you must also pay for a venue to host your production as well as insurance to cover it. The money raised will be used to cover these costs in addition to casting (actors), stage management (props, costumes, set design, public relations (fliers, photography, website), miscellaneous (rental space for rehearsals, tech support, copies), etc.
