Theatre Uzume is a fiscally sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization. Contributions for the charitable purposes of Theater Uzume must be made payable to "Fractured Atlas" only and are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.
Who are we?
Theatre Uzume was founded at the New School for Drama in 2014 by Suzanne Karpinski. It
is a platform for emerging artists to work collaboratively on the development
of hybrid or multidisciplinary theatre and its performance. We bring together
media from live rock music, dance, visual art, fashion, and puppetry to circus
with narrative theater. This rehearsal-intensive, devised manner of working
empowers artists to explore fresh manners of expressing their ideas.

How far would you go to reach the one
you love?
You try
on their friends, you try on their opinions. You change your hair. You change
your life. Then you look in the mirror
and realize you no longer know who you are….
Lamia is the
latest devised project here at Theatre
Uzume. Working in collaboration, it is an
exciting new dance-theatre project that features the music of psychedelic
guitar rocker John Barber of Ellis Ashbrook and Brooklyn pop chanteuse Janna Pelle, fashion designer Jessica
Lapidos of Tilly and William, and
choreographer Shannon Stowe of New Dance Theatre!
Lamia is a serpent that yearns to be human. She
watches the life of a man she desires unfold, helpless to attract his
attention. When a stranger offers her the chance to assume a womanly form, she
must carry her shameful secret with her, lest her true identity destroy them
both. Part dance, part live-music and part theater, Lamia explores the lengths
we go to and what we compromise to reach the promise of love.
We are currently in development! Our
first workshop showing concluded on August 7th, 2015 at
Westbeth Gallery in Manhattan. We conducted talkbacks after the performance to
gather feedback from our audience. We are gearing up with another round of readings this winter, and if we succeed in raising funds, will
bring you a full production around April 2016.

How Does Your Money Help?
Lamia is a collaboration of over 15 artists
and performers with a common artistic goal. We need $5000 to cover the basic
costs of labor and space for the production.
$25 pays for over one hour of
rehearsal space;
$50 pays our musicians for one
performance;
$100 pays for our website
hosting and program printing;
$250 goes towards compensating our
lovely designers and making sure they have the materials they need to do great
work;
$500 covers half of our marketing
costs!
We are fiscally sponsored by the
501(c)3 non-profit organization, Fractured Atlas, and your contributions
are tax deductible to the full extent of the law! Every dollar you donate,
from $10 to $1,000, will help us reach our goal.
Fiscal sponsorship from Fractured
Atlas allows us to raise tax-deductible funds for the project, piece by
piece, finding support from individual donations and grants that are
exclusively committed to nurturing the developing work.
