Banana Land: Blood, Bullets and Poison is Affected Film's first feature length documentary film in a series examining the human rights issues related to American and International business practices in the Latin American agricultural industry. In 2007, filmmaker Jason Glaser put together a team and set off to Latin America to answer a question that most Americans take for granted:
In the United States, why is a Banana from Latin America five times cheaper than an Apple from Michigan?
Through interviews and investigative work with banana workers, researchers, professors both in the US and Latin America, human rights lawyers and those directly and indirectly affected by the practices of the banana industry, the team discovered a story of oppression in the name of profit margins that has been going on for nearly a century.
With this film, Affected hopes to begin to change the perception of the banana in America and aborad. While the banana is in fact a nutritious and easy to peel fruit, it is also the end product of a myriad of harmful business practices that have led to birth defefcts, skin disorders, sterility, labor oppression and even murder and dismemberment.
Your contribution will directly support the campaign to raise awareness for an issue that we take for granted every day by giving Affected the ability to finish this film and create a dialogue forum to forge a solution to the problem.
We have finished principal photography and are well into the editing process, but we still need to:
- Acquire rare stock footage;
- License portions of 3 pre-recorded songs that are crucial to our story, including the Chiquita Banana theme;
- Compensate our composer, editors and designers, including the internationally acclaimed musician Kate Simko and award winning editor Diego Lopez;
- Finalize the picture (color correction, graphics, final distrubution presentation, etc...); and
- Promote and tour the film in the US, Europe and Latin America.
We are fortunate to have experienced producers and lawyers volunteering their time to negotiate the necessary items. However, this process is far from cost free.
We believe that $10,000 is the bare minimum needed to finish the film, but finishing the film is only the first step in the process. Thus, anything contributed above our goal will be put to a necessary use and enable us to enhance the quality and expand the scope of the campaign.
