Let's Send the Girl Scouts to Savannah!
is a campaign to help a Girl Scout troop from a rural town go on a four-day trip to jump-start their futures. Show them the possibilities beyond their own front doors. Let's open some doors for these girls!
THE GIRLS
This diverse group of girls is from different cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. They live in a rural town and many of them qualify for the free or reduced lunch program. In the Girl Scout meetings, as they interact with each other, their self-esteem and confidence grows. It is amazing to watch!
The Scouts are ages 7 to 11 years old. At their ages, the boundaries between them are wide open. This is the time in their lives that their futures are bright and anything is possible. Let's give these Girl Scouts the chance to explore opportunities that they might otherwise have never experienced.
THE PLAN
- Trip dates - April 4 to 7, 2013
- Travel from eastern Tennessee to Georgia to South Carolina and back
- Heritage Program - Juliette Lowe Birthplace, Savannah, GA
- Patriot's Point - weekend program aboard USS Yorktown, Charleston, SC
- Explore and tour two of the most historic and vibrant American cities
THE SPECIFICS
The girls will spend a day in the Heritage Program at the birthplace of Girl Scout founder, Juliette Lowe, in Savannah, GA. There they will explore the evolution of women in the marketplace and the vast opportunities open to them today.
Scouts will board the USS Yorktown at Patriots' Point in Charlestown, SC for a two-day program. There the girls will experience U.S. history and our heritage first-hand. Their understanding of patriotism will broaden and grow with these experiences.
WHAT IS NEEDED
To make this trip come true, $7,600 is needed. There are 18 girls and 3 leaders participating at $362 per person.
- 46% Bus transportation
- 24% USS Yorktown at Patriot's Point weekend for Scouts
- 13% Meals (other than those included on USS Yorktown)
- 7% Bus driver lodging and meals
- 4% Juliette Lowe Birthplace Heritage Program
- 4% Uniforms and badges required for programs
- 1% Brownie activities in Savannah
- 1% Overnight in community center
THE LEADERS may not realize it, but they have opened doors these girls might have never discovered. These two ladies are attuned to children in such a way that they nurture and inspire them at the same time. The leadership of this Girl Scout troop paves the way for adventures that will have rewards for a lifetime.
IF THE GOAL ISN'T REACHED? There are other smaller fund-raising plans in progress. The trip can be reorganized for one of destinations. The length of the trip can be shortened to match our available funds. Of course, full funding would be fantastic!
IF THE GOAL IS EXCEEDED? It will be recommended that those funds be used for troop community projects decided by the girls and inspired by the trip experiences.
WAYS TO HELP OUT are so numerous! Talk about it, write about it and include it in your correspondence. Link the trip to all your social media. There are so many ways to help the campaign. Anything you can do is very appreciated!
THE PERKS don't have to claimed but the girls always like to share their work and they will enjoy personalizing it for you.
In the "Essay" in TIME magazine, February 14, 2011, columnist Nancy Gibbs said,
"...If you want to change the world, invest in girls."
