MARTA RODRÍGUEZ, Filmmaker:

Born on December 1, 1933 in Bogotá, Colombia. She is a pioneer of documentary film in Latin America and member of the New Latin American Cinema movement that emerged in 1968.

She has positioned herself as the best and most important documentary maker in Colombia and Latin America during her artistic career of 50 years, with a filmography that boasts 18 award-winning documentaries at major film festivals. Among her most important films are: 

"The Brick Makers"  - "Chircales"(1967-1972) 

"Plains, Testimony of an Ethnocide" - "Planas, Testimonio de un Etnocidio" (1972)  

"Our Voice of Earth, Memory and Future" - "Nuestra Voz de Tierra, Memoria y Futuro" (1980)

Los Andes Symphony Orchestra, is a co-production between Colombia and Bolivia.

The project was selected by the intergovernmental committee of IBERMEDIA 2015 for granting a loan to support the co-production of Ibero-American films.

WHY I WANT TO MAKE THIS MOVIE​:

In my 50 years of work as an anthropologist and documentary maker I have walked the country and I have lived accompanying the people, living the untold story of a nation that lives in constant conflict. In these years I have not only witnessed, I have also accompanied and shared with my siblings the Indians, the Afro-colombians, the exploited children (protagonists of my first film Chircales, 1968) and all the marginalized society in this country. It's been 50 years of rivers of blood, loneliness, exodus and exclusion.

We were the generation of utopia, those who worked for changing this Colombia through our films, films made next to the people and with another vision. A generation that saw how the society was disintegrating and sinking into corruption, barbarism, extermination. This documentary takes place in the region of the country where I spent half of my life, in the mountains of Cauca, located in the Andean region of the country. The mountains where most indigenous cultures are preserved: Nasa, Guambianos, Coconucos and Yanaconas.

On 16th September 2011 Vanessa Maryi Coicue, a 11-year-old nasa indigenous girl, died because of a "tatuco" (an artisanal missile created by the guerrillas) launched by the sixth front of the FARC-EP in El Credo shelter, Cauca. She was standing at the door of her house and a splinter of this tatuco that exploded in a tree pierced her heart and took off her life. This is how I’ve started this documentary film project.

It is the death of this child and the pain of her parents, parents who become like living dead after the loss of their children, that leads me to collect the stories of indigenous children, victims of this fratricidal and useless war between siblings. These children are starting to live, to create dreams and fantasies for their future, and they lose their lives for an inhuman war, for grenades, land mines, artisanal explosives and weapons, attacks on their schools, that become nowadays trenches for the armed actors.

But in the midst of this nonsense war it is born the magic and the poetry, a symphony of Andean music in "El Credo" shelter (where Maryi Vanessa Coicue died) by the initiative of young students of the music academy of Popayan and Nariño, who lost their classmates, games mates and sidewalk mates in the war. These young musicians are in solidarity with the indigenous movement, so they have created an orchestra to remember the children victims of war and to accompany their parents in their grief.

GOAL:

These victims, the indigenous children of the Andes, are faceless victims who have never had a place in the media, they are residents of remote areas that even the Colombian people do not know. My goal with this documentary film is that these children, who are indigenous and part of the Colombian nation, get a face and a name, a memory that leads us to their parents that lost them, so they can express their immense pain and tell to the country to reflect.

HISTORY:

Colombia is a country that is in the international spotlight because of the complexity of its political and social reality. In Havana, Cuba are held peace dialogs that could lead Colombia to the end of the armed conflict with the Latin America's oldest guerrilla. It is a 60-year war with the REVOLUTIONARY ARMED FORCES OF COLOMBIA (FARC-EP) whose origin was in the department of Cauca in 1964. Cauca is located in the south of Colombia, in the Andes, where this documentary film will take place. This area is inhabited by various indigenous groups: the Nasas, or Paeces, the Guambianos, the Coconucos, and the Yanakonas. They have fought for their autonomy, territory and culture through the organizations that represent them, as the Regional Indigenous Council of Cauca - CRIC, that was born in 1971. 

Since the conquest time the indigenous of Cauca have fought to get recognition of their collective territories and the right to live in the land of their elders. In 1971 they created the CRIC in order to organize themselves as a group to recover their ancestral territories in the long-term. Since then there have been long years of fighting, where indigenous and Afro-Colombians put as many victims. 

In the Cauca, the indigenous communities got thousands of victims because of the war. In recent years, many children were direct victims of the war, because the guerrilla uses different types of weapons such as landmines, explosives, gas cylinders that they throw from the mountains above the towns and that have affected schools, hospitals and housing. They also use handcrafted missiles called "tatucos".

This whole situation of war, victims and displacement has led young people studying at music conservatories to show solidarity with the indigenous children. And, 3 years ago they created the ‘Orchestra of Andean Instruments’, whose purpose is to remember the children that died in the war. For each victim child the Orchestra composes a poem or a song, and they play them with the ancestral instruments of Cauca, such as the famous chirimías, flutes, quenas, stringed instruments and drums. 

These music groups are very important because they take children away from war by giving them the opportunity to escape through music from the everyday reality, from the fighting between the guerrillas and the army, or from being recruited by the armed groups. Many of these children have relatives who were part of an armed group, and nowadays they are victims of conflict.

HOW WILL WE USE THE MONEY

We are raising 30,000 USD for the post-production stage that will be used as follows:

In addition to the money requested in this campaign, different NGOs have shown interest in this project. It is vital for our country, Colombia, that this documentary is seen around the world because cinema is the way to give life to the indigenous children who died as a result of the armed conflict that our country has endured for over half a century.

Este es un documental sobre los niños indígenas Nasa, víctimas del conflicto armado en Colombia.

El Cauca es la región de Colombia donde se resguardan la mayoría de culturas indígenas del país y donde el conflicto armado ha tenido mayor intensidad durante los últimos 60 años.

Allí, una orquesta de música tradicional liderada por jóvenes indígenas nace para rendir homenaje a los niños fallecidos.

MARTA RODRÍGUEZ, LA DIRECTORA:

Nace el 1 de Diciembre de 1933 en Bogotá, Colombia. Es pionera del cine documental en America Latina y pertenece al movimiento militante del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano que surge en el año 1968.

Durante 50 años de trayectoria artística se ha posicionado como la mejor y más importante documentalista en Colombia y América Latina, sumando a su filmografía 18 documentales ganadores de premios en importantes festivales de cine. Entre sus filmes más importantes se encuentran Chircales (1972) - Planas, testimonio de un etnocidio (1972) -  Nuestra voz de tierra, memoria y futuro (1980) - Nacer de nuevo (1987).

LA SINFÓNICA DE LOS ANDES

La Sinfónica de los Andes es una co-producción entre Colombia y Bolivia.

El proyecto ha sido seleccionado por el comité intergubernamental de IBERMEDIA 2015  apoyando la coproducción de películas latinoamericanas. 

POR QUÉ QUIERO HACER ESTA PELÍCULA: 

En mis 50 años de labor como antropóloga y documentalista he caminado el país y lo he vivido acompañando a la gente, viviendo la historia no contada de un país que vive en constante conflicto. En estos años no solo he sido testigo, también he acompañado y compartido con mis hermanos indígenas, afrocolombianos, infancia explotada (protagonistas de mi primer film Chircales, 1968) y toda la sociedad marginada de este país. Han sido 50 años de ríos de sangre, soledad, éxodos y exclusión.

Nosotros fuimos la generación de la utopía, los que no la jugamos por cambiar esta Colombia con nuestro cine, un cine hecho al lado del pueblo y con otra visión. Una generación que vio como la sociedad se iba desintegrando y hundiéndose en la corrupción, en la barbarie, en el exterminio. Este documental ocurre de la región del país donde he consagrado la mitad de mi vida, allá en las montañas del Cauca, ubicadas en la zona andina del país. Unas montañas donde se resguardan la mayoría de las culturas indígenas: Nasa, Guámbianos, Coconucos y Yanaconas.

El 16 de septiembre del 2011 muere Maryi Vanessa Coicue, niña indígena nasa de 11 años de edad por causa de un “tatuco” (misil artesanal creado por la guerrilla) lanzado por el VI frente de las FARC-EP en el resguardo del Credo, Cauca. Ella estaba parada en la puerta de su casa y una esquirla de este tatuco que exploto en un árbol atravesó su corazón y fulmino su vida. Es así como he empezado este proyecto documental.

Es la muerte de esta niña y el dolor de sus padres, unos padres que quedan como muertos en vida tras la perdida de sus hijos, lo que me lleva a recolectar las historias de niños indígenas víctimas de esta guerra fratricida e inútil entre hermanos. Niños que están empezando a vivir, a crear sueños, fantasías para el futuro, que pierden su vida por una guerra inhumana, por granadas, minas antipersonales, armas y explosivos artesanales, ataques a escuelas que ahora se convierten en trincheras para los actores armados.

Pero en medio de esta guerra sin sentido nace la magia y la poesía, surge una sinfónica de música andina en el resguardo “El Credo” (donde murió Maryi Vanessa Coicue) por iniciativa de jóvenes estudiantes en academias de música de Popayán y Nariño, que perdieron a sus compañeros de clases, compañeros de juegos, estos jóvenes se solidarizan con el movimiento indígena y han creado estas orquestas para hacer memoria a los niños víctimas de la guerra y acompañar a los padres en su duelo.

OBJETIVO:

Estas víctimas, los niños indígenas de los andes, son víctimas sin rostro que no merecen ocupar un lugar en los medios de comunicación, son pobladores de territorios remotos que el pueblo colombiano desconoce. Mi finalidad con este documental es que estos niños, que son indígenas y parte de la nación colombiana tengan un rostro y un nombre, una memoria que nos lleve a sus padres que los perdieron, que puedan expresar su inmenso dolor y poderle decir al país que reflexionen.

HISTORIA:

Colombia es un país que esta en la mira internacional, por la complejidad de su realidad política y social. En la Habana, Cuba se llevaron a cabo los diálogos de paz, los cuales podrían llevar a Colombia al fin de un conflicto armado con la guerrilla más antigua de Latinoamérica. Una guerra de 60 años con las FUERZAS ARMADAS REVOLUCIONARIAS DE COLOMBIA; EJÉRCITO DEL PUEBLO (FARC-EP) cuyo origen se sitúa en el departamento del Cauca en el año 1964, situado en el sur de Colombia, en los Andes, donde tendrá lugar este documental.Este departamento esta habitado por diferentes grupos indígenas: los Nasas, o Paeces, Guambianos, Coconucos y Yanakonas, quienes han librado largas luchas por la autonomía, el territorio y la cultura por medio de las organizaciones que los representan, como el Consejo Regional Indígena del Cauca - CRIC, que nace en 1971

Desde los tiempos de la conquista los indígenas del Cauca han luchado por que les reconozcan sus territorios colectivos y el derecho a vivir en las tierras de sus mayores; en 1971 se organizan como el Consejo Regional Indígena del Cauca - CRIC - para proponerse en colectivo y a largo plazo recuperar sus territorios ancestrales. Desde entonces han sido anos de lucha, donde los indígenas y la población afrocolombiana ponen la mayor cantidad de víctimas.

Es en este territorio donde tiene lugar la guerra que ha golpeado a las comunidades indígenas sumando miles de víctimas. En estos últimos años los niños han terminado por ser directamente afectados por la guerra, dejando numerosas víctimas, ya que la guerrilla usa diferentes tipos de armas como minas antipersonales, explosivos, cilindros de gas llenos de metralla que lanzan desde las montañas sobre los pueblos y que han afectado escuelas, hospitales y viviendas. También usan unos misiles llamados “tatucos”, que fabrican en talleres artesanales.

Toda esta situación de guerra, de víctimas y de desplazamientos ha dado lugar a que jóvenes que estudian en conservatorios de música se solidaricen con los niños indígenas. Hace 3 años crearon la “Orquesta de Instrumentos Andinos” del resguardo de Huellas Caloto, cuyo objetivo es hacer memoria de los niños que han muerto. En memoria a cada niño se le compone un poema, se coloca su fotografía y con los instrumentos ancestrales del Cauca, las famosas chirimías compuestas por flautas, quenas, instrumentos de cuerda y tambores, los niños de la Orquesta componen una canción para hacer cantos a su memoria.

La importancia de la creación de estos grupos musicales, es que le están quitando niños a la guerra, pues les dan la oportunidad por medio de la música de evadirse de la realidad cotidiana, los combates entre la guerrilla y el ejercito, o de ser reclutados por los grupos armados, ya que la guerrilla practica el reclutamiento forzado. Muchos de estos niños tiene parientes que hacían parte de algún grupo armado, y que hoy son víctimas del conflicto.

Estamos buscando 30.000 USD que serán utilizados en la etapa de post-producción de la siguiente manera:   

Además del dinero solicitado en esta campaña, distintas ONG´S han estado interesadas en este proyecto, es importante para nuestro país (Colombia) que este documental sea visto en el mundo entero; el cine es una forma de dar vida a los niños indígenas que murieron por el conflicto armado que durante más de 50 años ha vivido nuestro país.
