What Are We Doing?
We believe that words have meaning, and we share the value of others’ words in four ways:
-
Conscious Connections Video Series: In each episode, we allow our subject to lead the conversation in whatever direction they wish, without trying to fit a certain agenda. At the end of each interview, our subject suggests the next person for us to interview, creating a path of connections that we trace throughout the episodes. The Charleston edition of Conscious Connections starts with Vanity Reid Deterville, a social activist for LGBTQ+ homeless youth through the non-profit organization, We Are Family.
-
Connections Book: The Connections book is essentially an expanded print version of our film series. We interview 10 individuals from the area, allowing them to lead the conversation in whatever direction they wish, with the freedom and security to get real. Each one chooses the next person for us to meet, and we follow these chains of connections. The end result is a coffee table book filled with portraits and quotes of 50-100 individuals in the region.
-
Songwriters Connected: Songwriters Connected a wider scope of the city's music scene. We film regional songwriters as they perform a song live and discuss the meaning behind the lyrics in an intimate, stripped-down set.
-
Connecting Mentorship Program: We host a pro-bono mentorship workshop teaching students interview, film, and conscious living techniques. The program will allow kids to take a turn both in front of the camera and behind it, while giving them experience with listening and being heard.
Why Does It Matter?
We want to amplify the voices of other people rather than pushing an angle or selling a narrative. We choose our initial interview subjects from a variety of backgrounds, and then let them direct us towards the people they know whose stories need to be shared. We give the city’s residents as much control as we can over the direction of both the interview and our presentation of their communities.
Through this project, we hope to bridge the gaps dividing society by showcasing the emotions, stories, and drives that we can all relate to. We talk people of all ages, races, genders, financial situations, etc., and we believe that while everyone has a perspective that makes them unique, we also have ties that bind us together across communities. By revealing these shared human experiences, we help people from differing backgrounds find a connection and approach each other with compassion and empathy.
Why Are We Fundraising?
We need your support to complete production on our Charleston, SC projects and launch us into our next stop: Austin, TX. These funds will go towards:
- Publishing costs for our Connections book
- Doing post-production editing on our videos
- Marketing and promotion in Charleston and in our next market in Austin
- Funding the 2019 two-day mentor workshop leading up to the Cooper River Bridge Run
