All Mythical Beings in the game are based on Icelandic & Nordic folklore. Descriptions and stories of each Being can be found in the separate Mythiopedia booklet. We also included some other information about the landscape, Northern Lights and other components, so it also has educational merit.
We were using a lot of sources to be able to find Mythical beings, Protectors and their stories related to all 4 elements - water, air, earth and fire. Before we started the main game development, we did a lot of background research to make sure that the information we are mentioning are as correct as possible, but as these are based on various stories one can never be absolutely sure.
Four of the Protectors are the legendary Protectors of Iceland (Vaettir) as seen on Iceland’s Coat of Arms. On the other side of each of the player tiles is another known legendary creature, from the folklore or the Viking sagas.

"Not as simple as it seems. You actually have to consider what you are doing so the other player might not benefit more than you from it. Love the different abilities. A great filler game!”

We are 2 friends, Monika, a Czech living in Iceland and Svavar, an Icelandic board game designer with pure roots to the first Icelandic Viking settlers. Our story began in March 2018, when Monika moved to Iceland and met me at work. But the story of Mythical Island began even earlier, in June 2016 when Monika came to Iceland for the first time. She came back several times as she had already fallen in love with the country. She wanted to buy some souvenir and because she likes board games, she was looking for some games with Icelandic folktales theme, but she wasn't successful.
And then, one day in May 2018 we were talking in the office and found out that we were both familiar with the motto “Life is a game, never stop playing!“. I had already his head full of clear game concept ideas, but lacking the theme on many of them. Inspired by that, we thought it could be a very interesting project to join Monika´s love to Iceland and my love for board games. So we started to work on this idea where stories and Icelandic heritage could be combined into something that could be interesting for both visitors coming to Iceland as well as some informative game for board game lovers. One of the game ideas that I had and was lacking theme for seemed to be perfect for this task, so work on Mythical Island begun in September 2018. We immediately started to dig into all the books and media we could find related to Icelandic mythical beings and folk stories, but soon we found out that many of the stories actually had the same origins. In order to spice up the mix and add more flavor to the game, beings from Nordic Mythology were added to the concept.
It hasn't always been an easy journey, for example when we lost all the game documentation because both the PC and backup disk crashed within a few days apart, or when we lost our brand-new built web page due to a different backup failure. But we never gave up and thanks to our will and strong belief in the game, the game is getting to the final stages. We have done several prototypes and tested them with different groups. Then we made improvements just to test it again to find out that the improvements needed some improvement. Sure, sometimes a frustrating process, but extremely rewarding and fun.
In order to get over the final threshold, we would need some support to fund the production of Mythical Island. We are doing the game in our spare time as we both have other full time job. If you would like to support Mythical Island in seeing the light of the day, kindly participate in Mythical Island’s Indiegogo campaign. Thank you!

The above are estimates for the shipping costs per region. The costs are for the copies shown. Please, keep in mind that these costs may rise depending on the evolution of the campaign (unlocked stretch goals which will increase the weight of the parcel), and due to industry-wide fluctuations in shipping costs between now and the time of fulfillment. We are using companies from the US and UK for shipping.
Note that the Icelandic games bundle is shipped from Iceland and will take slightly longer time, as we first have to wait for Mythical Island to get to us before sending it out.
We aim to offer the game as a Pick Up at Essen option, but we have to see the manufacturing and delivery schedule before we can offer that.
Backers in Iceland do not add any freight cost as long as they can pick up the game in Nexus store, Glæsibæ in Reykjavík OR in SPILAVINIR store. If that is not possible, we will be in touch with you to arrange local freight via the postal service.

There are not so many direct risk factors involved in our project. The design for Mythical Island is 98% complete and ready to be sent to print. The graphic design shown here may change slightly in the final version of the game. We will need a small amount of time for preparing the game for print and manage some potential stretch goals. We will be ready to proceed with production soon after the Kickstarter ends.
We aim to send the game out to backers in October, the time they will receive the game depends on the carrier service in each given area. We aim to offer the game as a Pick Up in Essen option, but we have to see the manufacturing and delivery schedule before we can offer that.
The estimated delivery time has been set as a 'reasonable' scenario, in case something should happen. If we can deliver the games early to our backers (and we hope we can), it will be a bonus.
The people behind the game have developed and published 4 board games since 2009, one of them Bardagi - The Claim for Gold was successfully funded trough Kickstarter within 24 hours in 2015, ending in 200% of the initial goal.
For the past months, we have been working with our manufacturer to ensure that you will receive a high quality game. Everyone who has tested our prototypes has helped us make the game good and playable. We are confident that you will be pleased with the final version of the game.
The biggest risks to this project are the things beyond our control: Production and shipping delays.
