Jay Martin Canada’s Renaissance Man inks a deal with Jamaican "King of Comedy" – Double the Laughs!

Multi-awarding winning comedian Jay Martin inked a spectacular deal with legendary Jamaican actor and comedian Oliver Samuels in June 2020. The deal includes a package of film and television projects which includes a trilogy of feature films including “Destination Wedding” – a romantic comedy.  “Oliver In Charge”, a television sitcom is currently in pre-production and slated for television release in 2021. This hilarious sitcom series follows Martin's character who plays Oliver Samuels estranged son.

"Oliver In Charge" and "Destination Wedding", along with two additional films to complete the trilogy, will form the basis of Ajahmae Live Entertainment Inc.’s foray into film and television.  Martin is intent on establishing and growing a successful production company that will develop and produce exceptional comedic content.  His TV and film projects will build on his wholesome family brand as he extends his audience in this space both in front of and behind the camera.

OLIVER IN CHARGE - The TV SERIES

Oliver In Charge is a hilarious sitcom which brings together Jamaican, Caribbean, Canadian and African cultures in a hilarious and heart-warming fashion that could only happen in the most multicultural city in the world - Toronto. The show and its diverse cast has a formidable fan base that has a broad appeal to international audiences across Canada, the US, Caribbean, UK and Africa.

Oliver Samuels affectionately known as the “Jamaican King of Comedy", has been acting on television, doing stand-up comedy, and performing in comic theatre for four decades. Samuels found fame on the popular Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC) television series "Oliver At Large". Video clips on YouTube with episodes of 'Oliver at Large' and various Oliver sketch shows still amasses millions of viewers to this day.  The Oliver Samuel brand is synonymous with Jamaica, comedy and laughter. Samuels is widely regarded as one of the funniest talents to emerge from the Caribbean.

Comedic co-stars Jay Martin, Trixx and Jean Paul all have prominent roles in the sitcom 'Oliver in Charge".  Collectively the trio continues to draw appeal and sell out shows - most recently the Three the Hard Way Comedy Show in Toronto.  In response to the COVID-19 pandemic,  The Minority Report  an online satirical weekly comedy special was developed.  Martin and Paul along with other notable comedians, celebrities and special guests entertained audiences providing some much needed comic relief during the unprecedented time.

THE SYNOPSIS

"Oliver in Charge" is a heartwarming family-friendly comedy with a rich interplay of memorable characters and the spice of Jamaican, Caribbean and African culture mixed into a hilarious touching stew. The situations the family members get into are relatable to people of all cultures. "Oliver in Charge"  celebrates our unique differences as well as highlighting our many similarities. The key thread of the show is that family is family, and ultimately nothing is more important than that.

As the sitcom "Oliver In Charge" evolves, Jay, played by comedian Jay Martin becomes increasingly frustrated at always having to keep his father, played by Oliver Samuels, out of trouble. Jay and Oliver regularly get into hilarious conflicts because of Oliver's  raw social skills, fascination with get rich quick schemes, and the inept advice he is always bestowing on his two daughters. 

Oliver's often archaic Jamaican views on women and relationships create sparks between him and Jay's Ghanaian/Nigerian wife Patience.  She is very loving and an independent, no nonsense lawyer.  Patience's mother Winnie, is an upper class proud Ghanaian woman, who views Oliver as an uncultured mooch on her daughter and son-in-law.  

Comedian Jean Paul, plays the slick talking Trinidadian next door neighbour.  Patience's money-challenged brother Kwesi, played by comedian Trixx regularly shows up at the household unexpectedly. Kwesi is constantly plotting get rich schemes with Oliver leaving them in precarious situations at times.

I am so excited about my entry into the television and film industry after over 20 years doing stand-up comedy. 

I want to share content that promotes and reflects positive living as a counterbalance to all the negative images that are reflected on the nightly news.  I truly prefer to focus on the good things that are going on in the world which are generally drowned out by the dark and ugly happenings.  Well, I’m here to bring the sunshine and, of course, the laughter. After all, laughter is not only good for the spirit it’s also good for maintaining mental health.

The time is now for Caribbean people, the diaspora and people of African descent to see themselves represented on television and in film.  "Oliver in Charge" does that.  It showcases the rich history,  traditions and culture of the Jamaican, Caribbean, African, and Canadian people.  The show transcends cultural barriers, bridges generational gaps and is relatable to young and old alike.  "Oliver In Charge"  is funny, witty and current.  It explores relationships, love and timely issues from a Caribbean/African Canadian lens.
