Hello!

And thank you for looking at our funding page! Let us tell you some more about our very exciting project:

The Media Medicum Photo Exhibition

Media Medicum is a group exhibition which will be set up by 5 Edinburgh based female photographers going under the name Panopticon. All 5 are currently enrolled at Napier University in Edinburgh - 3rd year Photography BA(Hons). This is our end of the year degree project and we really need all help we can get to make it successful. We appreciate all help - both funding contributions and/or people sharing our page on social media to make it grow.

Why an Art project in Medicine?

The 19th century was a historically momentous period in the development of various medicinal theories and practices. By investigating and researching these elements we aim to bring light to some lesser known theories and practices that are the basis of modern medicine.

Each member intends to explore a particular theory or practice. By creating a photographic response to our chosen subject matter, every work will re-frame the history of the past into a modern context. The project will bring to life an era that made modern medicine what it is today!

Who are Panopticon?

Salka Arnarsdóttir, Finland

Samantha Calvert, Scotland

Katie Matthews, Scotland

Malena Persson, Sweden

Rebecca Sandelin, Finland

Exhibition dates

April 2 - April 8 (2015): Gallery Seventeen, Dundas street, Edinburgh.

The Impact

The purpose of our collaborative exhibition is to look to the past in order to understand the medicine of today and of the future. In doing so, we intend to explore the public perceptions and ideologies of illness, disease and the most basic of medical practices. We intend to communicate, challenge and educate the public audience’s knowledge and understanding of 19th century medicine.

The use of the Funding

We aim to raise £2,000 which would cover the following:
- Exhibition space rental: 10 days.
- Printing and mounting all photographs on high quality paper from pro print lab.
- Materials for hanging all photographs.
- Promo & advertising of the exhibition.
- Printing of our high quality exhibition catalogue at professional print lab.
- Expenses such as travel costs, material for creating the work, opening night etc.

Risks & Challenges - and the solutions

This is currently a work in progress and all photographers are in the middle of producing the photos which are to be exhibited in early April. The group finds that this is what also makes this project interesting as the public can continuously follow updates of the development of the body of work. To get this project off the ground the group does need funding. However a detailed plan B does exist - and if funding goal would not to be met then an alternative exhibition space is available to lower cost, as well as printing will be made by photographers themselves instead of using professional print lab.

Other Ways You Can Help

The group understands that not everyone has the means to help out financially. But if anyone would like to support this project then a great way would be to simply spreading the word. Share it on Social Media! Tell your family, friends and colleagues! Any help is great help! Thank you.

Stay tuned!

This page will be continuously updated with images and video footage from our work in progress.
