Increasing Awesome - Decreasing Suck
The Project for Awesome started back in 2007 when a bunch of video creators decided it would be good, for one day of the year, to take over YouTube in the interest of good. Here's how we do it:
- Video creators all over the world create videos promoting their favorite charities.
- Video creators & community members donate items for Indiegogo perks.
- People donate money.
- The charities featured in the videos that the community collectively decides are the best of the year receive a portion of the proceeds of the Indiegogo campaign. The rest of the the funds go to charities working in global health & education chosen by the board of the Foundation to Decrease World Suck.
Our goal, of course, is to raise as much money as possible.

When does all this happen? THE DATES HAVE CHANGED FOR 2014! The Project for Awesome will now be taking place on the second Friday & Saturday of December, which this year will be December 12th to 13th.
Video submissions are open, and the 48-hour livestream is running from 12pm ET on December 12th to 12pm ET on December 14th.
The Indiegogo Campaign will be open from December 10th to December 16th.
How much of the money raised goes to charity? 100%, less the cost of perk manufacturing, shipping, Indiegogos fees, and merchant (credit card) fees, which are all, on average, less than 10% of the donation level. P4A has no traditional overhead. All of the time spent on the project is donated, guaranteeing that the maximum amount possible goes to charity.
How do we decide who gets the money? In 2014, the money raised will be split two ways: (1) From 12am ET on December 10th through 11:59am ET on December 13th, donations will go to Save the Children and Partners in Health, two charities that Nerdfighteria has worked with closely over the years. (2) From 12pm (noon) ET on December 13th through 11:59pm ET on December 16th, donations will go to community chosen organizations, based on votes on the Project For Awesome website. (This is, however, subject to the approval of the board of directors of the Foundation to Decrease World Suck, partly because the law is complex and partly to prevent a trolling group from coming in and hijacking the vote.)
When will I receive my perk? All perks, including Digital Downloads, will be sent out after the campaign closes. We cannot guarantee any physical perks will arrive before Christmas. We will be focusing on shipping out calendars immediately after the campaign, and then will continue with all perk fulfillment into the new year. It may be necessary to collect input from you for personalized perks; if so please keep an eye on the email address you registered with Indiegogo for a survey. We will update you on perk delivery dates as soon as possible!

You can also vote on which videos / charities you would like to see take in the proceeds of the Project for Awesome at projectforawesome.com.
And, of course, promote the P4A! Post this page on facebook, twitter, tumblr, etc. using the hashtag #p4a! Share your favorite videos and encourage your friends and family to participate.
