How does it work?

Over the last several years, we have worked to create a free mobile app that already has functionality for our earlier two products, the Roost Smart Battery and the Roost Smart Water Leak and Freeze Detector. With more than 100,000 devices in consumer’s homes today across North America and Europe, we have delivered a robust app and cloud solution that reliably sends alerts and notifications to your smartphone. 

With our new Garage Door Sensor, we started with this same Wi-Fi chip, micro processing technology and cloud based platform solution from our existing products. We then built a device where we added a small accelerometer, a 2-year lithium battery and a software algorithm that accurately senses the horizontal and vertical motion of your garage door to determine the state of the door: open or closed.

Whenever the garage door opens, the Garage Door Sensor sends a signal through your home Wi-Fi and then to the Roost cloud. This triggers a notification to your smartphone telling you that your garage is open. By using the app, you can set up how frequently you would like to get these notifications, whether it’s every time the door opens, or just specific times when you want to be notified.  

Note: you must have access to Wi-Fi and a smartphone.

Use Cases

1. Have you ever woken up in the morning only to realize that your garage door has been open all night long? 
   • We have a unique “before bedtime” app feature that allows you to receive a notification at a time of your choosing if your garage door is still open. 
2. Have you ever been 5 miles down the road and your spouse turns to you and asks if you remembered to close the garage door? 
   • We have a “door still open” timer feature in our app that allows you to set a time between 1 minute and 10 minutes to automatically trigger a notification if your garage door is left open after driving away. 
3. Have you ever wondered if your teenagers arrived home during the time period that they said they would? 
   • We have a “door not opened when it should be” feature that allows you to specify a timeframe of when your garage door should have opened. Receive a notification if your teen does not arrive home by that 4pm time you agreed to. 

How do I set up the Smart Garage Door Sensor in my home?

Easily! The process of opening your Roost Smart Garage Door Sensor package, connecting it to your home’s Wi-Fi and installing it on your garage door takes less than 5 minutes. No wires, hubs or professionals needed.

1. Download the Roost Smart Home App
2. Follow the step-by-step instructions in the App to connect your garage door sensor to your home’s Wi-Fi.
3. Uncover the double sided tape on the back of the garage door sensor’s clip and place it near the top your garage door. Or, use the included screws to attach the clip to your garage door.
4. Set custom notifications within the App to remain “in the know” about the state of your garage door at all times.
