Seattle Mural Project is about one thing: bringing art to the street.
This summer some of the
world’s greatest street artists will converge on Seattle’s Capitol Hill
neighborhood to produce a series of murals. Other street artists will be
painting murals in other parts of the city. We see this as the start of
something special: the moment that Seattle cements its reputation as a street
art destination to rival any city in the world.
Seattle is the fastest growing major city in the country, and
Capitol Hill a neighborhood in the midst of upheaval: multistory buildings are
sprouting where there once were parking lots; the entertainment and nightlife
industry are thriving.
Yet with all this progress comes a sense of loss. A loss of the
traditional character of Capitol Hill as the arts and culture center of the
city as tall blank walls obstruct your view from the street.
In cities across the nation and around the globe we've seen the
trend skyrocket. Street art and mural celebrations are enjoying tremendous
growth in popularity with new festivals appearing each year leaving a lasting
gift that can be enjoyed all year long. We believe it is Seattle’s time to join
– and, we hope, come to lead – this movement.
We’ll start on Capitol Hill. We need your help to bring it to the rest of the city.
It will make Seattle an even more beautiful and exciting place
to live.
Watch our 4 minute video for more insight into our vision.
Art to the People
This is about more than putting some
spray paint on a wall. This is about bringing the city together to experience
and celebrate art in the urban streetscape. We have some great parties planned in Capitol
Hill for the core of our celebration. We’re planning day and night events for
all ages. To showcase the murals we've got a cool day of fun planned with Blitz
Art Walk. Finally we plan to really top it off with an evening of excitement at
one of Capitol Hill’s coolest spots. This will be a night to remember, and your
chance to rub shoulders with Seattle’s coolest artists.
Not in Seattle? Fear not. We have an awesome team of
videographers and journalists poised to document and share the proceedings as
they unfold.
We have a grant from the city to
produce the murals… but there’s a catch.
The city won’t just write us a check. They will only reimburse us after we've purchased the necessary
supplies – such as paint, scaffolding and safety equipment – ourselves. Your contribution will literally make this
project come to life. We've done the planning, we know where we’re headed,
but we can’t make it without you. Contribute anything you can.
We will be reinvesting any surplus funds back into the Seattle
Mural Project: so your contributions will have double impact.
The mural train is leaving the station, help us keep it on the tracks! Thank you perks!
