Hello world, I am //SKID, LIGNUMs first wooden chef knife that is exclusively available here on INDIEGOGO.

//SKID is the result of our idea to realize ecologically sustainable products without a compromise in functionality. It took us nearly two years to create this unique wooden chef knife: the perfect synergy between cutting-edge steel and sustainable wood with exceptional durability.

WHAT WE NEED

//SKID is ready for production. What we need: SUPPORT for building up our new workshop with CNC and sanding machines and for paying our helping hands for manufacturing. We successful passed all the steps of the product development process. 258 Backers from Kickstarter are already waiting for their individual Chef Knife.

SHARP WITHOUT COMPROMISES

The blade of //SKID light and dark contains high alloyed carbon steel (1,3503). Alloyed by a high amount of chrome and tungsten we reach a hardness around 59 - 61 HRC. Traditional Japanese blacksmith use this kind of steel to create the sharpest knifes in the world. We are using a self-developed technique to connect wood and steel. The result: a food safe, durable and seamless connection.

We build a lot of prototypes, tested our chef knife in every manner: Professional Chefs used //SKID in their kitchens, a lot of friends that are cooking enthusiasts used it more than usual in their home kitchens.

DURABILITY

Every //SKID is vacuum infiltrated with a special mixture of oil and wax to close the pores and to make the chef knife food safe. With this combination of wood and finishing we keep up the ability of self-cleaning and antibacterial properties of tannin. With the closed pores, //SKID is not getting porous and can't contain germs.

BEHIND THE SCENES

During our studies we were asked to rethink a product of everyday use. Our professor presented us to the idea of wooden scissors - unfortunately that hasn’t worked out so far, sorry for that Prof.

However, cutting with wood - the idea captured us. Since then we couldn’t stop thinking about creating a wooden knife but remained sceptical about the viability of the project. We then experimented with various kinds of wood, combinations with different materials and 3D printing with woodfill.

The result: A wooden body combined with a very thin blade of steel. More precise: 97% Robinia wood and 3% high alloyed carbon steel making a familiar handling and cutting experience for all daily purposes in the kitchen.

WHY IS //SKID SUSTAINABLE?

A conventional chef knife produces 2133 gram of carbon dioxide. //SKID just produces around 67. With the same energy you need for one steel chef knife, we can create 32 //SKIDs. Furthermore we are planting trees for our knives and even use the off cut for packaging and holding systems.

THE BENEFITS OF HARDWOOD

Wood has many great characteristics: Robinia and Walnut, the woods of our choice have a very high percentage of tannin. Tannin is the stuff that kills bacteria and gives wood the ability of self-cleaning. Consequently, all you need for cleaning your //SKID is warm water. On top it is durable and lightweight, harder than oak and a renewable resource.

We already have fully established relationships with our suppliers and manufacturers in Germany. 
All //SKIDs and Cutting Boards are manufactured by ourselfs and our partners and 100% made in Germany - even our CNC machines are made here.
