Short
Summary
The
Somewhere There Creative Music Festival needs your support. The 2013 and 2014
Festival weekends were real successes. Lots of great music was made. Lots of great ideas were
shared. The 2015
festival promises the same kind of wonderfulness, but we need a bit of
help this time around to make sure we can do it right. Please buy your tickets and passes now
instead of later and help us deliver an event to remember for 2015.
About
the Festival
The Somewhere There Creative Music
Festival is an annual event that showcases the vitality and diversity of
Toronto’s creative music scene. This year’s festival will take place at the
TRANZAC from 20-22 February 2015. It promises performances by over 60
performers and composers doing important, boundary-pushing work in the city of
Toronto, including: Marilyn Lerner, Nicole Rampersaud, Brodie West, Tom
Richards’ Riverrun, The Uplifters, Peripheral Vision, JuctQín Keyboard Collective, The Muted
Note, Friendly Rich & The Lollipop People… and more! Our popular speakers'
series will include a prepared guitar workshop with acclaimed guitar wizard
Nilan Perera, and talks by Canadian composer/improviser Allison Cameron and
Marie LeBlanc Flanagan from Weird Canada/Wyrd Arts Initiatives. See the full program below!
Somewhere There is an
artist-run, not for profit collective founded in 2010. We are dedicated to
fostering creative music-making in Toronto.
What
We Need & What You Get
Although we have received a generous grant from the
Toronto Arts Council, it amounts to about half of what we need to cover the
costs of putting on our annual festival. We can
do it for less, as we are used to putting on concerts with little to no funding; creative music communities around the globe are used to sharing
their music for very little in return. But this festival is dedicated to
breaking that mold by trying to ensure that all of our participating artists are paid a fair wage for their creative labour.
We need to
do this right.
The funds generated
through this campaign will pay for the hall rental and give us a very modest promotional budget to work with so that we can fill the TRANZAC with a diverse
group of people throughout the weekend to give the festival the atmosphere it
should have. Should we raise more than we're asking for here, we'll do more promotion and increase the artist fees.
The perks!
First and
foremost, we’re hoping that you’ll buy your tickets and passes now instead of
later. A $10 donation will get you a ticket to a festival show of your choice. A $45 donation will get you a pass for the whole weekend.
For those
who would like to give a little more, we have some added perks, including t-shirts, buttons and stickers, CD packs featuring many of your favourite local
weirdo musicians, and even a full season's pass to ALL Somewhere There Events for the
remainder of 2015!
Even
if we don’t reach our goal, all of the funds raised here will go toward putting
on the best festival we can. Performers and other contributors will be paid an equal and fair wage (with the exception, of course, of the volunteer board of Somewhere There), and a comprehensive promotional campaign will be launched.
Other
Ways You Can Help
If you are unable to help us out financially,
please consider sharing news of our campaign through Facebook, Twitter and
other social media platforms to help spread the word.
