Spiral is the feature-length debut from writer/director, Josh Deane; a collaboration with Director of Photography, Brock Komon. It stars Dianne Shaw as Jeannine, and Matt Beisner as Frank, as well as a sizable and talented supporting cast.
The film explores the lives of people most often forgotten by the rest of society. The victims, the homeless, sex workers, criminals; all of them are represented in Spiral.
The inciting incident is the wrongful death of a young African-American man. Due to this terrible and senseless event, the young man's mother, Jeannine; and the cop who killed him, Frank, both come to a new understanding of justice and guilt.
Structured as an homage to the crime films of the Noir genre, Spiral utilizes old tropes to expand upon deep rifts effecting the structure of modern society.
Josh Deane is an outgoing student in the award winning Motion Picture Production Program at Wright State University. He has directed several short fiction films and documentaries, as well as Produced and Production Designed the short film, Twin Falls.
Brock Komon is a recent graduate of the program and has worked as an AC, camera operator, or Cinematographer on a number of films.
Not only will the completion of Spiral result in a strengthening of the growing Dayton film culture, but it will allow even greater opportunities for all who are involved.
This film is also the flagship project for the newly formed 5181 art collective, a group of like-minded individuals working in Dayton, Ohio.
We are asking for $5000 for our primary production needs. What would this amount be used for?
Where would the money go if we receive more than our goal?
Spiral covers a story that is seen too often in our modern culture. It cracks open the concept of justice and sheds real light on the current state of race relations and the new police state.
The title itself is a reference to the slow descent of Dante as he tours the bowls of hell, passing through all of the circles until he see the heart of darkness itself.
Similar to Dante in "Dante's Inferno," both Jeannine and Frank slowly pull back the layers of society and understood reality until both of them finally see the true end to their terrible descent.
We plan on taking this film on the road. We will not only be touring the festival circuit with it, but we will also explore newer methods of internet distribution. This is an important topic, and more people must be made aware of the injustice of our current system.
Just as Dante could not explore the depths without the help of Virgil, we can not complete this project without you!
We understand that it can be difficult to spare money for someone else's project. If you find yourself in this boat, but still want to help, Be sure to share this site with everyone you know. Get the word out!
Also be sure to keep up with this page, as we will be releasing new trailers and materials as we continue production.
Thank you and happy travels,
The Spiral production team
