Dear Slasher Horror Fans!

Do you remember the first time you saw Halloween? The original one by John Carpenter? How about the original Friday the 13th? Or even Friday the 13th Part 2? What about Wes Craven movies like Nightmare on Elm Street, Shocker, or The People Under the Stairs? Maybe Scream? Or one of its sequels?

Growing up as a teenage horror fan in the 80’s, I remember watching all those movies! Some on HBO but probably most of them on VHS from my frequent trips to the local video store. I watched so many of those movies, especially the slasher type thrillers that my parents were worried I would become “desensitized” to the violence… It turns out they were right! Just not in the way they meant– I never wanted to kill anyone or anything like that, but eventually I just got kind of worn out on that same old story repeating over and over.

It became especially frustrating in my early 20s as I spent more and more time writing. I would try to watch these movies– and rewatching some that I thought I had truly loved, only to find out their predictability and lack of variation made me quickly lose interest. I loved all the elements and tropes of the films and would lament vocally to my annoyed friends about how much better of a job I could do if I ever had the chance… Then I never really thought about it again, until after I had actually written “Vengeance Turns: Volume One” and “Volume Two” (my female-led revenge western-- Volume One premiering in August 2022 at the 22nd Annual Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival on Day 7 (https://www.hollywoodreelindependentfilmfestival.com/2022/day07.php); Volume 2 will start will premiere later in 2022) and watched both films begin their successful journeys through the film festival circuit.

It was during a discussion with “Vengeance Turns: Explosions of Truth” Comic Book Artist, Kurt Belcher about our passion for, and feelings about those old slasher films, that an idea using everything I loved about those movies crystallized in my mind. We began discussing the idea and the next thing I knew Kurt and I had 5 pages of story and notes written with some of the most insane, most fun stuff I could ever imagine seeing in a horror or slasher movie.

And we created a cartoon pig.

Hamson: The Curious Pig occurred to Kurt and I as we discussed “Calvin and Hobbes” by Bill Watterson (then created our own cartoonist named Geoffrey Loftidottir). We also discussed that unfortunate recent comic character known as “Pepe the Frog” who has been co-opted by fringe right-wing folks and plastered into offensive memes all over the internet. Hamson allows us to address issues surrounding these cartoon characters, to give us an uninhibited voice through which we and our characters could address many modern social and political issues that outrage the characters or Kurt and me… And he gave us the mask our killer–or killers– would wear.

Kurt Belcher and I originally wrote the story and screenplay for “Pigs to Slaughter” as a project that we would enter into film festivals and attempt to sell as a screenplay only, with no intention of producing the film ourselves. However, it quickly began to plague us that no studio in Hollywood (or anywhere) would allow our vision up onto the screen without great compromise.

Knowing the strength of this terrifying story-- with its strong female characters and diverse cast-- and confident that it could be made into a very quality film for a very reasonable cost, we didn’t want to see it diluted or washed away entirely. So we decided to basically risk everything and make “Spread: Pigs to Slaughter” on our own.

Everyone involved on this film absolutely loves every bit of this extreme story and we all want you to see it as its meant to be seen. Undiluted and straight from us to you!

WHAT IS THE STORY ABOUT?

Taking their first chance to get out after almost two years of being locked down, Rex and Amy decide to invite several of their friends (Antoine, Eileen, Eashan, and Jolly) out to a house in the middle of nowhere with hopes of pairing everyone off for a fun romantic weekend. However, Rex's brother Derek and his roommate-- the lusty, party-hungry Mazzy decide to invite themselves along, and later a distressed young woman named Florence shows up claiming to have been held hostage and attacked.

Unknown to all, a murderer--or two!-- is hidden among them and ready to deliver shocking twist after shocking twist. This is a slasher film to remember! Filled with tension, blood, sex, jump scares and maybe the most grisly murder to ever be seen on screen!

Everyone is a suspect in this gory thriller from Rex the boy next door to his moody brother Derek to the girl who insists on being called "Jolly" even when she often is anything except jolly to the social influencer on "Procrastagram" Antoine who will do anything for more followers to Eashan who seems like he might just be trying a bit too hard-- and let's not leave out "good girls" Amy and Eileen! And what about that girl Florence who shows up? How is she related to any of this or these 20-somethings?

Viewers will be on the edge of their seat as they learn the dark backstory of a cartoon pig named "Hamson" and his creator Geoffrey Loftidottir, and see the killers onscreen wearing "Hamson" masks!

Like Halloween, Friday the 13th and Scream before it, SPREAD: Pigs to Slaughter will leave its mark on the slasher genre, and bring something a little new to the game!

Jessica was excited as soon as she heard the concept; and once she read the screenplay she became a river of ideas on how to bring everything we wrote up to the screen!

David Obaniyi - Original Music Composer

SFX- Discussions have begun with a worldclass FX Artist who has worked on projects like "Deadpool" and "American Horror Stories"

Sound Recording, Gaffer, Post-production tasks like editing, sound and color.

Time - The funds we receive from this campaign will enable us to extend the shoot, which very importantly means more time dedicated to key practical and very bloody FX shots as well as many strong character moments.

Equipment - The goal is to make this film look totally professional and every time we upgrade our equipment such as the type of camera and lenses used by our Director of Photography. It will also affect amount and quality of lights used by our gaffers and since a lot of this film takes place at night and in very dark locations/settings, this will be critical. There are many other invaluable pieces of equipment that will become available to us as our budget increases.

Locations - We have already begun locking down locations but every extra penny we get will go to either upgrading the locations or, again, being able to add more time at each.

Practical FX – While most of the blood and gore will be handled practically, the unique vision of this film requires a certain amount of onscreen graphics to show smartphones using social media and video call applications.

Kurt Belcher and I have always been confident that SPREAD: Pigs To Slaughter would be a good movie, no matter how modest our budget. WHAT IS THE PRODUCTION PLAN?

We are planning to proceed directly into 2+ weeks of shooting in September (Scheduled Sept 5-20, 2022). Post-production will follow in October and November. According to our plan, the movie should be submitted to Film Festivals around the world in January of 2023 and Private Premiere Parties in Los Angeles, CA and Elizabethtown KY during the Spring. DVDs and Blu-Rays would go out in Feb of 2023, which makes our supporters THE FIRST ANYWHERE to see this very cool film! We will keep all our backers, supporters and fans aware of any changes that may occur as soon as they happen.

Robert Christopher Smith is known for getting projects done, and personally oversaw or performed every task necessary to see “Vengeance Turns: Volume One” and “Volume Two” through production and into Film Festivals. However, please keep in mind that unforeseen delays always remain possible.

The current state of the COVID-19 vaccine program in the USA along with already having our own protocols ready to implement makes anything COVID-related unlikely, and our chosen production dates leave a degree of flexibility in our schedule should any such problem occur.
